Lykens Cemeteries Rt 209

Would anyone by chance have a 'registry' (or know where to obtain one) of the cemeteries located in Lykens off of Rt. 209. From my understanding there are at least 5 cemeteries located all in the same area: IOOF and Union are 2 of them. Any help would be appreciated. Christine Appelgren Sonsteby

Christine,

According to Collected Cemetery Records from Dauphin County compiled by Dr. Glenn Schwalm, the IOOF Cemetery is on Chestnut Street. There is a macadem alley through it, as well as a dirt lane parallel to the alley. I visited this cemetery last year, thinking I had relatives buried there. Turns out I was in the wrong cemetery. But it's located just off of 209 at west end of town near Don's Food Rite. The book I have lists burials there.

The book also mentions the Old Union (Lutheran/Reformed) Cemetery located on the north side of S. 2nd Street between Spruce Street and the Catholic Cemetery. Burials are included.

My Dauphin County PA Archives book mentions the Patriotic Order, Sons of America Cemetery, but gives no details as to location. This is the one my relatives are buried in, and I have yet to locate it. There are burials listed here, as well.

If there's anyone you would like me to look up, let me know.

Hi Tammy,

Here's a reply I received when I inquired as to the location of the Lykens Cemeteries:

The only cemetery Lykens has is actually seven cemeteries combined. There is the (1) "Union", also called the Citizens Cemetery. This is the first and oldest of the cemeteries found here. If you turn in the alley (off Spruce Street between Main and South Second Streets), the "Union" section would be the
first section you come to on your right. If you turn off Spruce St.east into the cemetery on South Second Street - it's the first one on your left. This section goes eastward to the road, Above the Union and on the other side of South Second Street is the (2) P.O.S. of A. Cemetery (Patriotic Order of the Sons of America organization). At the east of the road that sets the boundary for the Union Cemetery, and running up the mountain side adjacent to both the Union and the P.O.S. of A. cemeteries is the (3)Catholic Cemetery (also referred to as the German Catholic Cemetery (451 lots). Ahead and adjacent to the Catholic Cemetery is the (4)Odd Fellows (I.O.O.F. organization) cemetery. This is the largest with 481 lots. Located in the middle of the Odd Fellows section and in its south corner is the smallest of the cemeteries, the (5) G.A.R. (Grand Army of the Republic)Cemetery. Further eastward through a short wooded section is the (6)Greek Orthodox Cemetery surrounded by a link fence. Next to it is the (7) Irish Catholic Cemetery.

I'd like to thank Deb for here information above. Hope this helps your search, Tammy.

Joe

Tammy - Would you possibly do a look-up for me
in Dr. Schwalm's book? I am looking for the birth and death of a John Wolf(e); married to Sarah Hand, and father of Rebecca and Elizabeth Wolf(e) plus others.
I only know of the two daughters, and would love to extend this family branch, but just do not know where to begin looking.

Thank you for your trouble.

God bless - Anne

Anne,

There are three Wolf/Wolfe listings in Dr. Schwalm's book. The first is a John Wolf, but he was born in 1963 and died in 1980.

The second is George M. Wolfe, born 1871, died 1951 and wife Sarah born 1875, died 1955. They are buried at St. Peter's Lutheran or Long's Church in Powell's Valley.

The third is Erenest E. Wolfe, son of Joseph and Kate, born 1894 and died 1896, buried Old Union Lutheran/Reformed Cemetery, Lykens.

There are several listings for Rebecca in the Church Records of Zion's Union Church, Orwin (birth and death), but I can't find any for her father, John. There is, however, a birth for a Sarah Wohlf (by the way, Rebecca's record is spelled Wohlf also, so you might be dealing with yet another spelling), daugther of Johannes and Sarah, born August 23, 1833, baptised May 23, 1834, sponsor, Catherine Hend (it reads "Hend", but should probably read "Hand."

I can't find anything else. I'll look again to make sure I didn't miss anything and will let you know if I find something.

Tammy

Tammy- Thank you so much for your quick response, and for the information. I am perplexed as to where Elizabeth Wolf(e) Houtz was born. I thought she might be listed along with Rebecca in the Orwin records. I would dearly love to know where John lived and his parentage-there doesn't seem to be anyone doing his line. I know of Sarah's, but not that much more. Sure wish I had started this when I lived in Sch. County area- would have been easier (possibly) to get information.

Thank you so much!

God bless -Anne

Jospeh Green abt 1865 (the father)
Aaron and Mary Ann Rusbatch after 1880
Joseph and Mary Ann Green after 1880
William and Susan Davis after 1880
Joseph and Clara Rustbatch after 1910

In Row #27 south to north of the IOOF Cemetery in Lykens, the following are listed:

William H. Rusbatch, s/Aaron & Mary A., b. December 13, 1858, d. June 9, 1874, 15.5.27;
Joseph, d. June 18, 1912, 56.7.12
Clara, w/Joseph, b. 1860, d. 1927.

This family plot is close to Bainbridge, Snyder, Pugh, Thomas, and Witmer, to help you locate it if you're ever there.

I could not find any of the other people you listed.
