I have information that a Moses Alexander (wife Hannah Carr) was buried at Christiana Creek Church Cemetery, Lewisville, Pennsylvania. He resided in Cecil County, Maryland so the logical Lewisville is the one in Chester County. I can't locate any record of this cemetery. Anyone know of it's existence, historical or current? Thanks.

Old Stone Graveyard/Lewisville

This won't help . . . but my WOODSIDE family history refers to a cemetery in Lewisville, known as "Old Stone Graveyard". Could this be the same cemetery you refer to? I'd not heard of a Christiana Creek Cemetery.

Supposedly when my ancestor, Archibald WOODSIDE, arrived at New Castle on Delaware in 1728 his parents were with him since he was but 8 yrs of age. The record says they settled first in Lewisville on the Maryland border. After his marriage to Rachel STEWART abt 1745, Archibald moved his family to a farm in New London, Chester County, PA; a few miles north of Lewisville and the Maryland line. I've never found any record of his parents.

Several Years ago we traveled to Lewisville to find the cemetery in person. It's quite old; markers in the late 1600's & early 1700's. Many broken, grass abt 2 ft; no longer cared for. Found no WOODSIDE stones; his parents are still a mystery. Diligent search in PA, MD and DE yielded no records on the cemetery and locals could add nothing except "it's been there forever". If you find anything records or history, I would love to know.

If the cemetery you saw several years ago with markers from the late 1600's & early 1700's was the "Old Stone Graveyard" of your family's account re Lewisville, I would sure like to have a list of names and dates from the headstones, if available; in any case, detailed directions on how to get there from, say, the crossroads of 472 and 841 at Lewisville. The dates correlate this cemetery in time with the New Munster Alexanders, whose lands straddled the MD-PA provincial lines right next to DE, to the Head of Christiana [Presbyterian] Church in this same area. Margaret Gonzales' Moses Alexander could be the one who was son of James B. Alexander, weaver, b. 1652, one of Rev. James Alexander's seven sons and two daughters, Presbyterian Scots who emigrated from Ulster to Somerset Co. and then Cecil Co., MD in ? (one account says 1678, another 1688, but it looks like they were there when New Munster was surveyed out in 1683 "for ODwire and 15 other Irishmen- a certain tract called New Munster (mostly Alexanders and Wallaces)." The records patch it together: MD Deeds 2:280, Cecil Co. 5/18/1715, sale by Stephenson to "James Alexander farmer, Arthur Alexander farmer, David Alexander weaver, James Alexander, weaver and Joseph Alexander, tanner" etc., a part of this tract going to "James Alexander weaver and his son Moses Alexander." The will of John Garner dated 3/11/1723 or '24 and probated in Cecil Co. MD 10/22/1725 leaves L40 to "the children of James Alexander by Mary Steel" and mentions David Alexander as one of them; Moses Alexander signed as witness. Baldwin: MD Calendar of Wills Vol. V p. 204. The Presbyterian Historical Society has John Garner as the first recorded elder of the Head of Christiana Church in 1707, followed by John Steel in 1711, James Alexander beginning in 1715, joined by David Alexander in 1726, the latter serving until 1732. On 8/9/1726, John Brevard of the Elder Broad Creek Church and David Alexander attended the New Castle Presbytery in DE. In 1717, "James the weaver and his son Moses were north of David;" in 1724 David patented 296 acres in Cecil Co. ("David's Purchase" - Land Office Annapolis MD). These Alexanders had already worked this land for some years, prior to 1714. One account has the Head of Christiana Church being some two hundred yards east of the DE line, and I find on the web this address and telephone number for Head of Christiana Church, "founded 1706, 2nd Oldest Presbyterian Church in Delaware": 100 Church Road, Newark, DE (no zip code), telephone (302)731-4169. It may be that the church and the cemetery associated with it, if any, were in two different locations. The modern town of Christiana is deep into PA, just west of Chester Co. over the Lancaster Co. line. Head of Christiana would refer to the headwaters area of the creek, which appears to be in the New Munster area, but I would need a more detailed map. A 1723 petition of the inhabitants of Milford Hundred (NE Cecil Co., MD, i.e., part of New Munster) for the building of a road describes its route "from David Alexander's, across the main fresh of the Elk River at Stephen Holingsworth's mill (which was the mill on Big Elk west of Cowantown) to the church at the northwest." History of Cecil Co., George Johnston. I do not find Cowantown on my map, but a northwest position for the referenced church relative to where I think the David Alexander property was seems to indicates the Lewisville area rather than Delaware, so I question whether this refers to the same church. In 4/8/1735, David Alexander witnessed a deed executed by James Alexander weaver, his son Moses, and his wife Mary. David, brother of Moses, is my ancestor. David's eldest son Aaron b. 1717 Lancaster Co., PA (also my line) moved to Sherman's Valley (I cannot find it in my Rand McNally- do you know where this is?) in Chester Co., PA. David sold his property in Cecil Co., MD to John Alexander of Chester Co., PA, moved to Chester Co. and died there in 1749. J.S. 10:124 & J.S. 10:147 Cecil Co. MD Land Deeds: Susannah of Chester Co., PA, widow, wife of David sells land sold by Stephenson in Milford Hundred to David in 1718 and sold by Aaron son and heir of David Alexander to John Alexander 1749 willed to Susannah 1762/1765 New Munster. Therefore I am thinking this ancestor may be buried in Ms. Gonzalez' "Christiana Creek Church Cemetery" and/or your "Old Stone Graveyard" at or near Lewisville, PA, especially if it turns out to be associated with the Head of Christiana [creek] Church which is in DE. Sorry to hear it isn't tended. I have no information re Moses Alexander m. Hannah Carr, nor any information on the Woodside family, but I'll keep an eye out.

While researching the Mackey's I came across info on Stone Graveyard in Lewisville that may help. The Rock Presbyterian Church, organized in 1720 was first located at what is now known as the Stone Graveyard in Lewisville. Afterwards it moved to Sharp's Graveyard at Fair Hill, Cecil Co., Md; and then again to its current location. The church bore the name Elk River and other names until 1787.

I'm not sure how much help I can give as to the physical location of the Old Stone Graveyard in Lewisville since it was over 20 yrs ago when we were there. The information given in Jana Rudnick's response is correct. I'd forgotten about the Rock Presbyterian Church . . . which is no longer there.

To my knowledge there is no list of burials; most of the stones are fallen or broken. The cemetery is actually in a field beside a beauty shop . . . or was years ago just across the state line in Cecil County, MD. There was also another, better kept cemetery closer to the town of Lewisville.

As to directions, I have a Chester County Atlas (1976) which shows a cemetery near Lewisville, Elk Twp on the Lewisville-Strickersville Road near Elk Creek. My memory says the Old Stone Graveyard cemetery is the one just over the line in Cecil County, MD but the map doesn't show Maryland. If you email me privately, I'd be happy to arrange to copy this (or other) atlas pages which show road names and route numbers.

In your long message you mentioned that your ancestor, David Alexander, sold his property in Cecil Co., MD to John Alexander of Chester Co., PA. You don't give a date for that transaction, but obviously it was before 1749 when David died.

Have you identified this John Alexander?

Old Stone Graveyard is in Lewisville,PA. It is behind the old school that is now a beauty shop. The Cecil Co. Historical Soc. has a list of the tombstone inscriptions. It originally belonged to Rock Church which is now located south of the Mason-Dixon Line in Maryland.

Thanks for this information. I know the cemetery which you describe now. I was there but had it confused with another nearby. I remember now about it's association with the Rock church and believe it was considered to have been in Chester County, Pennsylvania in the early 18th Century before Mason & Dixon were commissioned to settle the border dispute. It would have been in that time period I would be looking for WOODSIDE, STEWART or CRESWELL burials.

I didn't know the Cecil County Historical Society had a listing of the tombstone inscriptions, however. When we walked the graveyard years ago, very few tombstones remained, and of those, few were legible. I would liked to pursue this. Would anyone have a mailing addressing for the Historical Society or a URL for a website if they have one?

There two towns called Christiana. One is in Lancaster Co.,PA the other is in Delaware near Newark. Head of Christiana Church is on Rt. 273 west of Newark. The cemetery is there too. Old Stone Graveyard is in Lewisville, Chester Co, PA. It is the site of the original Rock Church which is now located in MD. Sharps Cemetery is associated with Rock Church. For this area is is helpful to research all three states.
The address of the Cecil County Historical Soc. is 135 E. Main St., Elkton, MD 21921. They request a donation for research service.

Stone Graveyard -- Lewisville, PA

I'm sorry I just noticed your reply now when I was notified of a response to my original questions about the Old Stone Graveyard. You explained it so well. Thank you. I've been to both Old Stone Graveyard in Lewisville, Chester, PA and to Sharp's Hill. Now I understand the relationship.

My WOODSIDES, STEWARTS and CRESWELLS are believed to have arrived from Northern Ireland abt 1728; the same time as one of earliest recorded potato famines. This famine was never heavily publisized like the Great Famine of the mid-19th Century when so many more people were affected and forced to take ship.

My folks arrived through the port of New Castle on the Delaware and these areas, churches and graveyards are mentioned briefly in some old family writings. Sadly, their connections to same are not explicit nor are the family connections. I have the WOODSIDE/STEWART marital joingin in Chester County, PA but since I cannot find the STEWART/CRESWELL that produced the STEWART (Rachel) of the WOODSIDE (Archibald)/STEWART marriage, I thought I'd plunge into the area history and see what surfaces.

Thanks for unconfusing these. It helps.
