Re your querie John Challis and Matilda Challis. I have the family history of Matilda Challis, dating back to the early 1700's for most family lines an additional 5 generations in some cases. I have copies of the original documents of the Challis family who arrived in Tasmania on 19/8/1862 from Suffolk, England as bounty immigrants sponsored by the Rev Henry Dowling. I also have some details of the parents of John Cowley, convict William Cowley and mother also a convict Ann Daley. Too much to include here. John Cowley's sister Charlotte and Matilda Challis' brother William are my wife's GG grandparents.

An old message I know! but you mention William Challis and my g.g.grandfather was also William from London, he married Margaret Leonard around 1848 and they lived at Hoxton New Town. My gt grandmother was Margaret Ester Challis b1849 and she married John Conlay 1869, their daughter Martha was my grandmother. As you have 5 generations I was hoping there just maybe a connection. Thanks anyway, Pam Smith

Hi Sandra,
My name is Philip (Phil). We have mutual interest in this area. I can assist in a limited way. Matilda Sarah came into Tasmania in 1862 on the ship Black Swan, after sailing into Melbourne on the Netherby, from Suffolk. She was only 5 years old.
Matilda did marry John Cowley/Couley.
Regards, Phil

Hi again Jack,
We must share a little more re our common ancestry. Charlotte Cowley is my ggmother. Your wife and I have a direct connection there.
I posted a great photo of Charlotte recently. Perhaps we can share some photos, etc.

Hi Albert, I found your post today and am wondering if your father Albert was born in 1916 in Hobart? I am looking into the marriage of a Charles Elias Sutcliffe who married Isabella Mary nee HARDWICK nee PELHAM in 1911. I have an interest in this PELHAM family and we may be able to share notes. They did have a child named Albert Francis Sutcliffe in 1916 who I think married a lady named Constance. Please contact me if this is your family. Chris.
