In 1905/6, my paternal grandmother Rose Lillian Scott, was indentured to a seamstress for two years using funds (£20)from the Society of Saint Onge.

The Secretary of the Society was J G Grellier. The Treasurer was Mr C W Heraud of 12 Belgrave Street Liscard Cheshire England. The money was made available from a bequest in the will of Mrs Margaret Mary Delaigle.

The documents I have were printed by Grellier and Son, Printers, 211 Grays Inn Road London W. C.

My grandmother's maternal grandmother's name was Charlotte Scott (nee Pottier). She lived in the "Alms House at South Hackney for about 25 years. Died there June 1898".

My grandmother had a brother who was put out as an Apprentice by the Society on 16 October 1896. There was also a nephew apprenticed around 1925.
I can find no reference to the Society of Saint Onge in any records.

Hi Alan

The organisation that you are looking for is the Society of Saintonge and Angoumois, the incomplete records of which are at the Huguenot Library in London.

Within those records are a series of other records, one of which deals with the apprenticeship scheme set up under the will of M M Delaigle.

You should be aware the the Huguenot Society does NOT provide a research service for these records, to access them you would have to search the records yourself or get somebody to do the look-ups for you.

My family were the Grellier's from Soho and more specifically Grays Inn. My great great grandfather was John George Grellier, and he was a stationer. He owned a business Grellier & Son. I saw a post by Alan Riley on this message board dated 2004, stating that a J. G. Grellier, who was the then secretary of The Society of Saint Onge (1800's-1900's). Iwas hoping that Alan, or anyone else who may have information on the Grelliers of Soho or John George Grellier, or his father John Grellier, would contact me. Thanks so much! Had a look on my database and have come up with 295 Grellier references in 18 documents or publications.

I've also looked through the catalogue of the records of The Charitable Society of Saintogne and Angoumois (to give it it's full and proper name)and they terminate in 1877, tho it appears they may have been a further, now lost, record book. There are no references to Grellier in the catalogue but that means nothing really.

I have also been looking into The Society of Saint Onge. I came into contact with the Secretary about 15 years ago, it is my understanding that the society loaned some of their books to the Huguenot Society. When I first went the Huguenot Library they were not able to locate them. The Society still had some later book and as far as I know they are still functioning as a charity today.

My mother was a Grellier and the root goes back to Peter Paul Grellier c 1740
