Hope - Manchester, England

dhbailey1  (View posts) Posted: 21 Dec 2000 2:48PM GMT
Am looking for more info. on the following family - Joseph Hope and Elizabeth Feay married ca 1850 (have the date but not at hand), found on 1861 census for Hulme, Manchester, England. Joseph was the son of another Joseph and Elizabeth was my ancestor's sister, being the dau. of John Feay and Jane Atherton.
Joseph and Elizabeth had at least 6 kids - John, Jane, Ellen, Edward, Thomas, and John Hebblethwaite Hope. The first John died in 1870, age 19. The second John might not be Joseph Hope's son - this is a bit of a mystery - his father is named as Thomas Hope on the birth certificate but it appears Joseph died AFTER that.

Hi - thanks for the offer. I don't know if I could read it as I have a Mac.
I would be very interested in any deaths for an Elizabeth Hope after 1881 - she was b. ca 1828/29.
I have found out that the John Hebblethwaite Hope and his brother Thomas were probably not the sons of Joseph Hope but the illegitimate children of Elizabeth Feay Hope and Thomas Hebblethwaite, who were living together in 1871. I am not sure what happened to Joseph Hope.
Diana.

Hi Diane,
I had the 73 year old as a possible for the Eliza who married John Hope in 1837 as a minor. However on reflection they wouldn't have let John marry a 7 year old. Do you think that they might have just guessed at ages when registering?

Hello,
I am researching the HOPE Family in and around Bolton and wondered if the XL database would help.
In particular I am interested in ELLIS HOPE who was a Stationmaster at Westhoughton in 1901, I am seeking details of his Father, Grandfather etc etc as well as his descendents.
I would be obliged if you could send me a copy using my email.
Thanks
David Hughes

Paul - my Hopes have connections to Westhoughton but not directly (some of their cousins moved there and married) - do you have any Feays in your line? My Feay ancestor's sister married a Hope in Manchester ca 1848..

Diana,
My info does not have any FEAYS names but this may be because I have little info about the HOPE name prior to 1846.
The details that I do know are:
ELLIS HOPE b13 Jan 1846 at Bolton
His Father was ELLIS HOPE who married SARAH JARVIS probably in about 1840-45.
At the time of the birth of ELLIS (1846), ELLIS, the Father, was a weaver and lived in White Lion Brow in Great Bolton, Lancs.
Does any of this link with your enquiries?
David
