A packet ship called "Samson"

Wondering whether anyone has anymore information on the packet ship "Samson" that sailed from London to New York.I am particularly interested in its trip when Daniel Chadwick was the master and it arrived on the 20 Jun 1836.But any info.as to how the boat looked or an old painting of it would also be great. If your ancestor was a passenger on that ship would also be interested to be in contact.

Good question. My great great grandfather was aboard from Liverpool UK to the US.

Have you already seen the ships passenger list for the SAMSON, or is it only a painting of it you are looking for?I managed to get the ships passenger list to come up today.
There are two pages, and Chadwick was the captain.

Thanks Brian but that's how I found out my ancestor was on the Samson via the passenger list.I would just like to know how the ship looked and what happened on that voyage, that sort of thing.I am trying to see if there is a log book around for that specific voyage but of course many are lost so I rate my chances very slim indeed..

The SAMSON with Chadwick as Captain had another voyage, which arrived New York from London on 6th Nov 1833.
On it is listed James Fenimore Cooper, the author of Last Of The Mohicans and The Deerslayer. The transcription of the ships passenger list highlights his name and explains that he was an American author, who was returning to USA after a 7 year stay in England.

The ships passenger list also mentions a James Fenimore Cooper Society,(scroll right down) although when I clicked the link, it didn't come up on my computer.

...I just thought that this author was so famous that there might be some books - maybe even a biography of him in which there may be some mention of the SAMSON. I don't know whether the James Fenimore Cooper Society still exists, but if it does, maybe they have researched and know something about the SAMSON.

Just looked for more information on google.

The James Fenimore Cooper Society came up, and on it, it says, "We welcome questions from students, scholars and readers." jfcooper@stny.rr.com

Why not ask if there is a book where he describes his voyage on the SAMSON from London to New York in 1833.

Louis,
On Ancestry, go to Search. Click that and then click Immigration and Search. On the right of the page that comes up, see New York Passenger Lists 1820 -
1957. Click this.

Now type in... Name: Cooper (We know that the Cooper family was on board).

Arrival: 6 Nov 1833. New York
Departed: London

Scroll down to where it says ship's name, and type in Samson.

Gender: male.

Click Search. ...Click View Record. ...Click View Passenger List. ...The original of the ship's passenger list comes up.

I have a full subscription to Ancestry, and I just can't remember at the moment if you need this to access the
ships passenger lists.
