I always thought my father's family was from Aguada de Pasajeros, Las Villas, Cuba. I just received my grandfather's baptismal certificate and discover the following:
His mother was Teresa Leiva (from Camarones, Guantanamo). Teresa's parents were Jose Jesus Leiva and Maria de la Concepcion Rangel (I assume they were also from Camarones). By the way Teresa was born Abt. 1855. Any help!!

I have a Juan Fernandez-Leyva in one branch, from Oriente province, born 1859. His brother, Antonio, served in the Mambi army, but his name is listed as LEIVA. So be aware of the different possibilities when researching this name.

Thanks for the response.
I have been unable to find any information on the PRUNA's, maybe you can help.
All I have is my grandmother, Gumercinda Pruna, was married to Alfredo Carballosa, around the turn of the century. They lived in Banes, Oriente. I have no idea if she was born there or in Santiago or even Holguin. I was in Banes in November and I knocked on some doors, none of the Prunas would talk to me.
I understand some Prunas went to the US in the 40's and I think they went to PA and the Carolinas.
If you have any more info, let me know,
Thanks,
Martha Moreira

My wife's family is from Santiago de Cuba. Her maternal great grand mother was Maria Concepcion PRUNA y Santa Cruz married in 1860 to Vicente de Jesus Martinez y Betancourt.

Also on her maternal side another great grand mother, also from Santiago de Cuba was Ismaela LEIBA married to Francisco Cruz.

Just wondering if her PRUNA's have any relationship to yours.

I am from Banes. I knew Juan Pruna and his wife. They had no children. They lived in Redding, PA in the 40's and 50's, they moved to Miami at the begining of the 60's. They are both dead, but they had some nephews and nices that they brought from Banes. I don't know if they live in Miami or if they moved someplace else. You can try to reach "El Municipio de Banes en el Exilio" in Miami, or in Redding, PA. Maybe they have some information for you about this family.

Antonio Bechily-Carreño  (View posts) Posted: 26 Apr 2001 12:00PM GMT

Saludos cordiales.
Antonio

I too have a Leiva in my family. Her name is Petronila Polanco Leiva, daughter of Jose(Joaquin) Polanco and Josefa Leiva. They lived in Oriente Cuba and my family has told me that Petronila was a child during the burning of Bayamo Village. I dont know if possibly Antonio could be a brother or uncle of Josefa Leiva or maybe even Petronila.

If you have any other info or details on Leiva, please let me know. I'm trying to find out who Josefa Leiva's parents were?

Any info is much appreciated.

An aunt of mine had it so she gave me a copy of it. If you need something in Cuba the only way I believe it can be done is through somebody over there who can get it in person and mail it to you. Otherwise I don't know if writing directly to the church will be succesful.

Ulises,

I have a GGGGGrandfather by the name of Gregorio Perez Leiva form Bayamo, Oriente. He was born sometime around 1770-1785 and was the son of Blas and Isabel. I'd like to know if there might be a possible family connection.

Thank You

Hi Andres,
I don't know how to answer your question. The only info I have about my grat grandmother is that her name was Teresa Leiva and was born in Camarones (I think in Las Villas) between 1850 and 1855 and she married my great grandfather Nadal Ferragut (from Palmas de Mallorca). Teresa's parents were Jose Jesus Leiva y Maria de la Concepcion Rangel (they were cubans but I don't know from what city or province). Maybe a relationship exists but I can't be certain). It will be nice to keep contact and maybe we can find some common point in our ancestors.
Happy Holidays to you and your family,
Ulises (uferragut@aol.com)
