I understand that Richmond Cedar Works was down around Money Point, WashingtonTownship. My grandfather worked there, I believe as early as 1920.

Does anyone have suggestions on where I might pick up a bit of history and even better A PHOTO!!!! of the Works.

Thanks to all the helpers on this board!

Richmond Cedar Works was gone before I came to VA but it is my understanding that it was in Chesapeake, near Great Bridge and located on or just off of Cedar Road. Cedar Road was supposedly named for Richmond Cedar Works. The library in Norfolk or Chesapeake may have pictures of Richmond Cedar Works. The area around Gilmerton, across the river from Money Point, supposedly an early shipping port for timber from the Dismal Swamp.

Thanks Tommy for your response. The reason I guessed they were close is that my grandfather worked at Richmond Cedar Works and lived at Money Point in a boarding house. He met my grandmother there. I am pretty sure they did not have automobiles, but, hey maybe??

Anyone know if there was a transit system in operation at that time, 1920 to 1940s??

Carol, I checked with a friend who has been in the area a lot longer than I. He added a room to his house about 1964 and purchased lumber from Richmond Cedar Works which was located in the Bells Mill area of Chesapeake, just off Cedar Road. He thinks that RCW had closed their saw mill there by that time but were still selling lumber. He doesn't remember whether or not they had anything in Money Point. I think they were a large company at one time and had more than one location. It seems that I heard at one time they started business in the Richmond area and also may have had operations in NC. Another friend who I will probably see tomorrow morning worked for them in the Bells Mill location. Will see what he remembers.

I live in Chesapeake but don't do much research here. My ancestors were mostly in NC. My great grandfather did have a brother, George Colbert who lived here in 1900 and worked for John Roper Lumber Co which was in Gilmerton, just across the river from Money Point. Because of that, I am somewhat interested in the lumber companies. It is my understanding that Gilmerton, where the original Dismal Swamp Canal terminated was the home for several lumber companies before 1900. It also seems that I have heard that the street car system serviced that area. I am pretty sure it serviced South North Norfolk as far out as Portlock. There are a couple of books I can check to try to verify this but it will be a few days before I can get back to the library.
The other friend I spoke of worked there during the late 50s or early 60s. He said the yard where he worked was the one in Bells Mill off Cedar Road but is not sure if they had a yard in Money Point or Gilmerton. It was right on the canal which would have not been too far from Money Point along the river. He thinks the Bells Mill yard was the only one they had when he worked there.

I have placed a 1932 map showing Richmond Cedar Works, Money Point and Gilmerton on my website. I also added a few excerpts from the local newspaper that mention Richmond Cedar Woks. This is a link to the site

Thinks for the information. This map also shows the RCW plant at Bells Mill which is the one my friends remember. I was under the impression that the company was large enough to have other plants in the area but didn't know for sure. Is this map available at the Norfolk area libraries? I have marked your site. It looks very interesting. Tommy

Tommy, I get maps for scanning from various sources and have a few on my website. This particular map came from the Library of Virginia. It was downloaded in many sections and stitched together. Now when I want a particular section, I just cut it out. Here is a link to the map online. Click on N then Norfolk County.
