I am looking for information on Benjamin Glovier. He was born in Virginia and later lived there also, but I show a Benjamin Glovier living in Nash Co, NC in the 1820, 1830 and 1840 census. Can anyone help?? Any other information on Glovier's in this area would be helpful.

There are alot of Glovers in Nash Co. It should be easy to get your hands on Rackley's abstracted works of deeds, estate records, wills, minutes to find them. And, don't forget to do a thorough census study.

Here's an entry from Tommy Strickland's recently uploaded transcriptions of some church books he inherited. Hopefully this entry will help someone.

"A BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH OF THE LIFE AND DEATH OF ELD. W. G. GLOVER.
Brother Glover was born in Nash county, Sept. 13th, 1857. He united with the Free Will Baptist church at Flood's Chapel, in Aug. 1884, and was licensed to preach in Sept. 1891, and in Aug. 1892, was ordained. At the General Conference in 1892, his name was enrolled on the list of ordained ministers. He was badly afflicted with that dreadful malady, consumption, and so much so that at times he could not walk exceeding 200 yards without resting, and yet ever so remarkable seems, not withstanding his afflictions, he oftimes could preach for three quarters of an hour, and his sermons were full of power and love for all men. He was taken with a hemorrhage of the lungs on Friday at the Conference in 1893, and some kind brethren raised funds and sent him to his home in Spring Hope, on Saturday morning, where he died in his room alone, on the following Saturday night, being the 20th of Oct. 1893. His funeral was preached by Elder P. T, Lucas and he and his wife are both buried in the family graveyard of J. H. Valentine. His little daughter is in the orphan asylum at Oxford, where she is well cared for. --J. W. Valentine"

Jeff,
I'm wondering if you have any information on Derrick Glovier who married Mary Ann Simmers. They were in Rockingham VA. in 1850 and 1870 census. My husbands great grandfather was Derrick's son Jacob C. who married Mary Lucinda Nay. I'm wondering if Benjamin Jr. was related? and if Lydia Simmers his wife was related to Mary Ann. (one researcher says Mary Ann's father was Abraham Simmers but I have no proof). Anyway, anything you can share on the family, ancestry (especially if you know parents/siblings) would be greatly appreciated.

My great-great grandfather was Benjamin Glover of Linville, Virginia (Rockingham County). He had 13 children, of which 7 were boys. Half of his family (4 of the boys) used "Glover"; the other half used "Glover." I knew both. I was told there was an argument in the family in the middle of the 19th cnetury, and some of them put the "i" in, but I doubt that is correct. The Civil War records lists them both ways.

Benjamin did have a son named Benjamin, my great-grandfather John's brother. He also had a son named Derrick. I have various records.

Jay,
Thank you for responding to my inquiry. Derrick Glovier's father - Benjamin Sr.? - would be my father-in-law's great great grandfather...same as you.
Benjamin Sr.
Derrick Glovier m. Mary Ann Simmers (Rockingham Co, VA)
Jacob Clifford Glovier m. Mary Lucinda Nay (Edgar Co., IL)
Lillie Mae Glovier m. Quilla Joe Daniel (Texas)
Wayne Daniel m. Peggy Jean Riddle (Texas) - my father-in-law

It's interesting about the name. My father-in-law has been quite emphatic that "his" family spells it with an "i". So, who knows, maybe there was some disagreement :-)

Anyway, I'd be very appreciative of any information you'd be willing to share...not just the genealogy, but especially the family stories and history.

Please contact me directly at jcdaniel@pacbell.net

Warm regards,
Jan Daniel

This is a revised text as of 12/02. My great-great grandfather was Benjamin Glov(i)er, born somewhere in Virginia, about 1792, perhaps in the Culpeper or (old) Frederick County area. About 1810 to 1823, he lived for a while in Shenandoah County (Pine Forge, Smith Creek, north of New Market. He went to Hardy County (now West Virginia) briefly in the 1820's, but returned to an area east of Melrose and to Simmers Hollow, Linville, (both in Rockingham County, an offshoot of Augusta County) by about 1830, where he remained. The names of his parents are unknown. The name may have originally been Glovier, but many soon used the name Glover. Apparently, none of the family could read or write in the early decades of the 19th century. Benjamin married Dorcas Alexander in Shenandoah County in 1815. Dorcas was said to be a first cousin, and her brother, Washington, was born in or near Alexandria in about 1802. This suggests that both families may have been in that area in the 1790's. Their parents were Thomas and Sarah Alexander, and Thomas came to Pine Forge to work as some kind of forgeman by about 1815 at the latest. I would appreciate any help anyone could give me in locating information about the genealogical roots of Benjamin Glover and these Alexanders.

Glovers, Gloviers, and Simmerses

Here is how the many Glovers, Gloviers, and Simmerses are interrelated to begin with. This family used/uses both spellings, Glover and Glovier, up to today. See www.glover-glovier.com:

Lydia Simmers to James W. Gaither No date. (Her second husband, below, was Benjamin Glovier, Jr., my great-great-uncle.)
Mary Ann Simmers to Derek Glovier 8/2/1850 Bond Book 846 (Derrick was my great-grandfather’s brother; so he’s also my great-great-uncle.) Her parents Abraham Simmers & Elizabeth Plumley, his Benjamin Glovier & Dorcas Alexander (My great-greatgrandparents, whom I am researching.)
Abraham Simmers & Elmira Glovier 8/15/1865 Bond book 1 His parents Christley Simmers & Elizabeth. Hers Benjamin Glovier (Sr.) & Dorcas Alexander. (Elmira was my great-great-aunt.)
William H. Simmers & Josie Glover 12/8/1892 His p. Noah H. Simmers & Emme Summers Her p. Derrick Glover & Mary Ann Simmers. (Josephine was my father’s first cousin, once removed.)
Rebecca Simmers & Americus Glovier 7/28/1874 daughter of Isaac (Ike). (Americus is the son of Legrand Glovier, who was another brother of Derrick.)
Benjamin Glovier, Jr., & Ann Elizabeth Niecwander (Niswander) 10/14/1848 (His second wife was Lydia Simmers (Gaither); see top above.)
Joseph D. Simmers & Ada Virginia Holsinger 10/25/1903 His p. John C. Simmers & Frances Glovier & Daniel Holsinger & Elizabeth Fogle. (I don't know who she is.)

My great-grandfather John was the son of Benjamin Glover (Sr.) and Dorcas Alexander, that is, brother to Madison, Legrand (Sr.), Derrick (Derek), Benjamin (Jr.), Thomas Jackson (Jack), Harriet (Brunk), Sarah Catherine, Amanda, Margaret, Richard, and Elmira (Simmers) (not in order).

I had 48 great-aunts and –uncles, all born in the Shenandoah Valley. I knew them all, but I find it strange that I never knew how many had Simmers connections. I can’t figure out exactly how some Glovers and Simmerses may be related. It gets too complicated, but, if the sexes had been reversed, probably many would be Glovers, instead of Simmerses!

Benjamin Jr. was my great grand father. Do you have anything else before Derrick?
