They both came from around a town called Setina? around serbia or montenegro. Also if anyone knows how to find lists of ellis island boat passengers would be helpful or ANY advice, information or anything would be greatly appreciated THANKS!

Hello,
Setina should be Cetinje in southern Montenegro, some 45kms SW of the actual capital Podgorica (btw Cetinje is the former capital).
Ask about Ellis and ships on Croat board, same site.

I am a descendent of setina. The name was changed at Ellis to Shetina to keep the correct pronunciation. We hail from Slovenia. Hope that helps your search.

Hello Francie,

Names were not changed at Ellis Island! Although many times we hear this story the ship manifests were done in Europe and along the voyage. I have looked at several hundred manifests and find them to be the true sp. in 99% of the cases. And a few that are just plain errors, 1%. The orginal ship manifests are online so you can check SETINA and most likely it will be correct. Perhaps the reason the H was added was to keep the original sound of SH. The S may have had a mark / over it in the old country which have it a SH sound

There are 71 listings for SETINA at Ellis Is most from Slovenia and 1 SHETINA from Slovak region of what was then Austro-Hungarian Empire.

I see that you have been searching since 1998 and that you say that Radovan arrived in 1912 and "Elenka" DRASKOVIC arrived 1914 at Ellis Island. Have you actually found their manifests? If you have the place of birth will be shown on the manifests. Can we assume these 2 married in the US? Where in the US did they live. I have not found any records for either of them... that is based on the scant info you gave.

Also, having been to Montenegro, I would agree with a previous poster the place may be Cetinje... which sounds much like setina.(the J has a sound like Y)

Also the original spellings would be NIKVOIC and DRASKOVIC

However... I just found a Radovan NIKCEVIC arriving on a Ship at The Port of New York 1912... could this be your Radovan?

hi and thank you for your response and comments. we have searched the ship rolls, we think that may possiblly be him, but he left from another country than yugo. so not sure they must of wrote the rolls how they spoke it not speaking english it must of been difficult. he settled in nevada in tonapah. the place the records were held burned downed but manage to get a copy of their marriage certificate. it is the same with many inaccuracies, due to language barrier? never did find her passage over to usa. . so havn't gotten much farther in my search but am still moving forward, any thoughts ideas and help would be appreciated. thank you

Hi phenixtoo

FYI Yugoslavia did not come into existance until after World War I, which ended in 1918.

FYI ship manifests were created at the port of departure by steamship agents who were also interpretors. However the info on the manifest was taken from passports issued to immigrants in their home countries.

There was no need to speak English on those ships.

How do you know they were processed through Ellis Island?

How do you know their years of arrival in the US?

Can we assume they married?

I find no one by these names in Nye County Nevada. Did they go by different names?

The only thing I find is 1920 census record
Name: Gass Hikovich
[Gass Nikovich]
Home in 1920: Tonopah, Nye, Nevada
Age: 41 years
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1879
Birthplace: Serbia
Relation to Head of House: Head
Father's Birth Place: Serbia
Mother's Birth Place: Serbia
Marital Status: Single
Race: White
Sex: Male
Home owned: Rent
Year of Immigration: 1903

Or in 1920 census for Artesia, Lyon, Nevada

Name Age
Rado Nickovich 50
Anna Nickovich 46
Eli Nickovich 5
Rado Nickovich 4 5/12
Thomas Markovich 42

Do any of these match?

I would like to help you find both of them, but the info you gave is scant.

What are their birthyears?

Did they marry?

Did they remain in Nevada in Nye County? Or did thy move to another place?
