According to family lore, August Swanson (1862-1926) was my Grandfather John (Yohan) Swanson's half brother. According to census records August arrived in Canton, Fulton County, Illinois between 1880 and 1882. In the Gothenburg Passenger List I found an August Sevenson leaving for Hull England 27 Aug 1880. It reports he was born in Ryda Starsborgs (Starberga) läns. I have not been able to find any other information. Can anyone help?

Possible helpful information: It is believed that August was born 21 Sep 1862 to Magnus Svensson (or Sven Magnusson) and Sara Carlsdotter or possibly Kjalsdotter.

The parish in the EMIHAMN database (and also I believe the Gothenburg passenger lists) is not he birth parish, but the parish he emigrated from.

Ryda is a parish in Skaraborg county ("Skaraborgs län")

Have you found your grandfather in the Swedish records? that would make it easier to find a half brother.

August was "living in" Ryda at the time of his emigration. He wasn't necessarily born there. He "might" have been born there but that is not what the parish means in this record. (I have been told that Ancestry.com uses born for that field. They are incorrect.)

This appears to be the same man on the Emibas CD.

Thanks. I'll try your suggestion. I had given this a rest for the past year. My Mother is now 97 and has so wanted to find where her Grandfather originated.

With your and many other's help, I have not only found Great Grandmother but also descendents of 2 of her 8 Siblings.
