Re: Howarth Family - Portsmouth, Hampshire, England
Hi, I'm searching for Kate Eleanor Reynolds, my Grandmother. She was born around 1900 in Hampshire. On her marriage certificate it states that her father was Richard Reynolds but there is the possibility that she told a white fib. Kate Eleanor married James Albert Thompson in 1919. Kate died in 1984.
If there is any connection please let me know. Maureen.

Re: Howarth Family - Portsmouth, Hampshire, England
Maureen,
According to Ancestry your Grandmother was born on 15 Jan 1902 and died Aug 1984 in Canterbury, Kent. Do you have her death certificate as this will give your her place of birth? From that we could work back from the 1901 census returns to find her parents etc.
Had a quick look to see if she was born in Hampshire and couldn't find her!

Re: Howarth Family - Portsmouth, Hampshire, England
Hello Maria, A long story so here we go. Kate Eleanor Reynolds married James Albert Thompson in 1919 in Southwalk, London. It states that Kate was nineteen at the time. It also states that her father was named Richard. He was in the Navy. They had 5 girls - one being my Mum. Kate left James and the children in 1929. The 3 eldest girls were sent to Pembroke house in Chatham, it was then a Naval orphanage. The other two stayed with friends. The girls believed their Mum was born in either Devon, Cornwall or Hampshire. We had been searching for many years to find her so eventually my Dad contacted a geneologist. We found her death certificate and it states that she was born on the 12th January 1902 in Bodmin and that the informant was Robert Peter her son who at that time lived in Sittingbourne, Kent. (I live in Maidstone, Kent) We traced Robert and had a family get together - wow I had an Uncle. He did not know about his 5 sisters who by this time had all passed away. He named his father on the death certificate as Robert Thompson but actually had no idea of who he was. It was strange seeing photos of my Grandmother and there was no doubt that it was her, the family resemblances were incredible. In the 1901 census there is a Kate Reynolds living in Hampshire with her daughter of 2. In 1891 there is a Richard Reynolds who was born in London but was in the Navy stationed at Portsmouth, in the Portsea Naval Barracks, single at the time. Richard, in 1901 was on the RN Ship the Magdala in Bombay and between the two dates he married. I can't find their marriage certificate. Even though there is Kate who was around 2 in 1901 I can't find her birth certificate. I could be getting this all so wrong but I have this gut feeling that I'm on the right track. Thank you for answering my mail, and if you find anything out please let me know. Hope to hear from you soon. Maureen. Have A Happy Christmas.

According to the GRO there was a marriage registered in the 3rd quarter of 1919 in Southwark of a Kate E Reynolds and a James A Thompson. Sounds like this is yours.

Re: Howarth Family - Portsmouth, Hampshire, England
Hello, I have the marriage certificate of my Grandmother and Grandfather - Kate and James married in Southwark. I have traced most of the Thompson side but my Grandmother remains a mystery. Marriage certificate states that Kate Eleanor Reynolds was 19 in 1919 and that her father was named Richard Reynolds. My uncle was told that she was born in 1902 in Bodmin Cornwall. Either way we cannot find her birth certificate. I have searched for Richard Reynolds - Kate's father and found one that could be possible but there are so many Richards. It is my Grandmother, Kate Eleanor Reynolds and Great Grandparents on the Reynolds side of the family that I am very curious in. Any information would be great. Thanks, Maureen.

Re: Howarth Family - Portsmouth, Hampshire, England
Maureen,
The 2 Kate Reynolds that appear in Portsmouth in the 1901 census are my GG and G Grandmothers. Kate's husband George Reynolds was also in the army and was not with his family in the 1901 census. Kate is working for Walter Ravish and his family in Sultan Road. Walter Ravish was a witness at the wedding of George and Kate nee Howarth in St Thomas' Church, Portsmouth on 18 Sep 1898.
Have come across a Eleanor Kate Reynolds who was born June q 1902 in Devonport, Devon do you think this could be your Kate Eleanor Reynolds?

Re: Howarth Family - Portsmouth, Hampshire, England
Hello Maria,
I obtained Eleanor Kate Reynold's birth certificate in 1996. Her father was named as Samuel Reynolds and her mother was Agnes Annie nee Brace. I did quite a lot of research on this Reynolds family and came up with nothing. Kate Eleanor Reynolds named her father on her marriage certificate as Richard Reynolds. I will carry on looking but it does sometimes get quite frustrating.
Regard, Maureen
