Hi All,

I'm really confused about which records are online, I'm trying to research a great x2 uncle (George Iredale) who died sometime in the 60s/70s (my grandmother can't remember when exactly) but there doesn't seem to be any death records online for this period? Have these not been published yet or am I being thick?! It's driving me mad as I need his death cert to obtain his royal navy service record.

If these records aren't online does anyone know what the next step would be?

Any help/advice greatly appreciated.

James

Death records from that period are not indexed. You will need to trawl through year by year 1/4 by 1/4 in the 1837-1983 indexes on this page.

Or post the name you are after and maybe someone will be kind enough to do it for you.

Sorry I didn't mean to say post the name- you have already DOH!!

What WOULD help is his approx age (rough DOB) and place of death.

Hi Carol,

Thanks for your reply, I wasn't going mad then! Do you know why those records aren't indexed?

My George Iredale was born in 1917.

Thanks for all your help.

The records are not indexed cos they haven't got round to it yet! 1984-2006 is and Free BMD are doing 1837-approx the mid 1920's,but at the moment there's a gap in the middle!

Births have been done by Ancestry from 1916-2005.

Did your George have a middle name and what part of the country did he live/die?

I did make a start on searching for you,but without more clues it would hard to tell if I had the right man or not.

Only ages at death were given up to 1969,after that complete dates of birth appear in the indexes.

Hi Carol,

Thanks again! I thought i was going mad because of the gap!

I assume marriages are the same then?

As far as I know my George didn't have a middle name, he was born in Gateshead and died there or close by (he stayed in Durham all this life). My gran said he was in his 60's when he died.

Many thanks (again),

James

James,

I think this is him....

George Iredale born ? Feb 1917(no one knew the exact date!)
died in Gateshead in Jun 1/4 of 1971 ref 1a page 1665

And yes you are correct re the marriage indexes-no easy searching there either ;-)

By the way do you know what a death cert will show?

Hi Carol,

Wow that was fast! Looks like it's the right George Iredale as the birth index i've got for mine (haven't ordered his birth cert yet) is Jan Feb Mar 1917.

Yes i've ordered a few death certs in the past but they've always been for deaths post 1983 or pre 1900. I don't really want to have to order this one but it's the only way I can get the Royal Navy to release his service record.

Thanks again for all your help!

James

It is worth checking on UKBMD because some counties have fairly complete BMD online. Many don't of course!
