Sherman Hurt was born about 1870-1873 in Indiana. I have found him in the 1880 Census Patoka, Pike, Indiana, Page 300B, age 10, with mother Margaret Hurt, age 45, KY and sister Laura Hurt, age 18, KY and no father listed. Does anyone know who his Father was and his Mother's maiden name? What was Sherman Hurt's father's date of death, burial info? What became of Sherman's Mother and Sister?

Reportedly he is in the 1900, 1920, and 1930 Census of Pike Co., Indiana, but I have no other info. Can anyone tell me information from his household on any or all of these Census?

I have also found the name spelled Hert in some records. I would be interested in talking to anyone with Hurt ancestors in Pike Co., IN and surrounding counties.

Hi Pat. I think Sherman's parents were W. N. Hurt and Margaret Young who married in Wayne county, Kentucky on 26 Jul 1857. In the 1860 they are in Wayne county and listed as Wilson N Hurt, 35, Margaret, 24, and Elizabeth Jane, 2, all born in Ky. In 1870 they are in Indiana, Pike county, Monroe township and listed as Wilson Hart, 48, Margaret, 34, Elizabeth, 12, and Laura, 5. All born in Ky. You know about the 1880 census. Don

Me again. I believe your Laura B Hurt married Michael Devine in Pike county on 22 Mar 1888. In 1900 Pike county, Patoka township the head of the family was Margaret Hurt, 62, born Sep 1837 in Ky as were her parents, a widow, mother of 4 with 3 still living, and her son Sherman, 26, Apr 1874, single, same birth info, coal mining. Could not find in 1910. In 1920 in the same place the family was headed by Sherman Hurt, 47, born in Ind and both parents in Ky, a miner-coal mine. his wife Mary, 49, born in Ill and both parents in Ind, and his father-in-law Midian Burston, 84, widowed, born in Ind and both parents in Va. In 1930 they were in Pike county, town of Winslow, and boarders, Sherman Hurt was 57, first married at 46, a laborer-coal mine, and his wife Mary Ann, 59, first married at 19. Thanks much for all the great information. I thought possibly that Sherman Hurt, born 4/4/1872 in Pike County, IN. was the son of Sherman Hurt b. Ky and Margaret Wright. That Sherman I had as Sherman Hurt b. Ky, son of Larkin Hurt and Jane Sloan. Larkin Hurt b. 1825 and Jane Sloan b. 1827 possibly married in Wayne Co., Kentucky January 02, 1843. But I did note in my file that Sherman Hurt might have been born before Larkin Hurt and Jane Sloans' mariage date. So I have been pursuing the wrong line and was all mixed up.

Another problem is where is Elizabeth Jane Hurt in 1880? There were several Elizabeth Hurts in Pike Co., IN, at least two born around the same time.

Is Elizabeth definitely the below and divorced? And is she later married to Martin Copeland b. 1866 of Pike and Greene Co., IN. and when? Possibly I need to pursue divorce records for Elizabeth Hurt? Miley? in Pike Co., IN.

Elizabeth J Hurt married Henry B Miley in Pike county on 22 Dec 1874. Elizabeth J Miley married Martin Copeland in Pike county on 10 May 1890. Don

The Hurt Family came to Pike Co Indiana from Wayne Co KY, before that they were in South Carolina. The Hurt immigrant came to Virginia before 1700.

From the book Hurts from South Carolina to Wayne Co KY, the first to come to Pike Co IN were William "Billy" b 1797 SC m Temperance Bertram, Joseph Hurt b 1798 m Polly Eades, Esther Grubbs - possibly bur Blackfoot Cem, another family - James Henry Hurt m Sallie Burnett, John Calvin Hurt m Sally Tuggle,

Five of the 8 children of Joseph and Mary Hurt came to Wayne Co KY from Spartenburg District South Carolina. All of the Hurts in Wayne Co KY can be traced to William B. Hurt, Joseph Hurt, and James Hurt. William Hurt came to Virginia and had 1600 acres in King William Co VA. Deed Patrick Co VA 1830 names Heirs of Moses Hurt and representatives of Joseph Hurt, deceased. They intermarried with descendants of Jeremiah Burnett, Emmanuel Sandusky, Henry Tuggle. All fairly well documented. I have them all, whatever that says about Wayne Co KY. All have Revolutionary Soldiers.

Hope this helps. There is a researcher in Springfield Illinois who has the Pike Co Hurts. That was the first I had heard of them.
