John Hopkins born 1844 England
I can find John who married Euphenia Batchelder in the USA 1870 census. I'm trying to find out when he came here and who his parents were. I have hit a total dead end. There are a whole bunch of John Hopkins and I don't have a clue as to where he was born. Any help would be appreciated. In fact other than the 1870 and 1880 USA census records I can't find much on him.

What about her?
Where was she born?
I have checked FReeBMd and can't find an English Birth (or marriage) - have you checked for a US marriage?

Re: John Hopkins born 1844 England
According to the records, she was born in Salem, Washington, New York. She was born in 1846 to Charles and Eunice Batchelder. In 1870 she was 24 and he was 26 so it would be logical that they got married in their teens or early 20's. New York records are hard to come by. I searched a couple of sites and couldn't find anything. Her parents were both American. I'm checking to see if he was possibly Irish and came through England.

Hi, Look for his death, if you can find it and get the cert, it usually gives parents names. I have looked on familysearch and can't see it. Regards Bernice

Re: John Hopkins born 1844 England
Hi Sharon, I don't have anything after 1880 on familysearch. I have Charles Eunice and 6 children 1850 census living in Salem, Washington, including Euphema. again in 1860 census, Washington, N.y, Kingsbury ward, including Euphema. in 1870 euphemia and John Hopkins with son John, Fort Edward, Washington. 1870 Charles and Eunice Botcheller, with 4 children also living Fort Edward, and possible their son John wife and 2 children Fort Edward. 1880 Euphene and John Hopkins and 4 children, living Fort Edward. 1915 (I can't see original) census Euphimo Hopkins age 66 grandmother born 1849, though its only a possible.
I have come across so many different spellings of Euphema and Batchelder, it would make your head spin. Considering Euphema was with her parents in Washinton N.Y in 1860 age 14, and say give her 3 more years to be old enough to marry, and the fact she is married in 1870 with a 2 year old child, we could say she married between 1863-1869 if married before her childs birth, either Kingsbury ward, Washington or Fort Edward Wasington for place of marriage (maybe). If you don't have any of the above details on census already, let me know. Though all from family search, no paid sites, as Im not a member of any. Some birthplaces different on censuses also age differences, but usually childrens names and ages confirmed the family. Regards Bernice

Re: John Hopkins born 1844 England
Don't you have paid subscription to Ancestry? I thought you had to have one to post messages?????
I have all of that stuff. Believe me I know what you mean by the spelling of Euphemia. I thought it had to be a very uncommon name. I did a search on just that name, came up with 4 pages of them. Spelled all kinds of ways. Part of that reason is because whoever is doing their transcribing isn't taking the time to do it right. Proper transcription means taking the time to check a couple of pages for similar letter grouping. Example: What does a specific letter look like in another name. You wouldn't believe how many times that has been the bigger issue. Right now I doing a search on "Strickland", again spelled all kinds of ways. Most are right, just transcribed wrong. If I ever get this tree done I'm going to volunteer to do transcription of some of the England Parish records. Most people hit a dead end there because so many of the records have yet to be transcribed. Are you working on the Hopkins family??

Re: John Hopkins born 1844 England
No, I just joined rootsweb board. I'm not related, just enjoy the search, if you click the view posts you will see, Im into every name. I know what you mean about the transcribed census etc, though its free can't complain, had the same problem with a marriage from my family on Irishgenealogyie, the names were Hampson that married Levey, it was transcribed Harrison married Casey. Well good luck with your search. Regards Bernice.
