I am posting for a friend. Based on adoption records she was born Shirley Ann Marie Werezak 23 February 1939 at the Salvation Army (also known as Bethany house) home for unwed mothers in Saskatoon, Canada. Her mother was age 19, with brothers and sisters age 27, age 23,age 17 and age 12. Her mother had died twelve years earlier and her father had remarried. Her background is listed as Ukranian although her father had become a converted Catholic. Her father was age 26, a high school graduate with some college. He was English.

My friend came to the United States as a child and now lives in the Los Angeles, CA area. She has two children. She is just interested in finding out more about her birth family. She has visited Canada several times over the years and would like to connect with any family she might have. Or even just more details about the family if others are familiar with the family.

Any information much appreciated.

I found a Werezak bio in the Radisson history book, it's near Saskatoon. Check out pages 471 and 472. http://www.ourroots.ca/e/toc.aspx?id=4404 I found no clues in the bio, but it may help. Butch

Thank you so much. There was a clue in the book but there was not enough detail in the query for you to find it. The adoption records are surprisingly detailed with just the names all blacked out, The records mention an older brother who worked I a garage. I had already considered the possibility that George and Marie who are listed as Werizek in the North Battleford 1916 census were the parents of the girl who gave birth to my friend. The ages of the children matched somewhat those in the adoption records. It seems likely the girl would have named her daughter after her deceased mother. Now for the interesting part. George and Marie had a son age three in 1916 named Nikola. One of the articles lists Nick Werezak as married to Natalie Belyk. The Belyk family owned and operated a garage. Certainly not proof but definitely worth following up. Unable to located George and Marie in 1921. Again thanks so much for the help

Minnie Dubnyk Obituary

Minnie Dubnyk (nee Werezak)

The death of Minnie Dubnyk (nee Werezak) occurred on Thursday, August 27, 2009 at the Yorkton Nursing Home at the age of 90. She is survived by her sister, Rose Jarman; brother, Bill, both of Saskatoon; and many nieces and nephews of the Dubnyk and Werezak families. Minnie was born to George and Mary (Budzak) Werezak at Hafford, Saskatchewan on November 24, 1918. Her formative years were spent on her parents homestead along with her four sisters and six brothers. After completing high school at Hafford, she attended Saskatoon Normal School in 1940.

While teaching at the Two Creek school in the Wroxton District, she met the love of her life, William Dubnyk. Shortly after their marriage on October 30, 1943 Minnie became a full time farm wife. She was extremely fond of their farmstead, its natural setting and the frequent visits of wild life. She took much pride in their fruit and vegetable garden and enjoyed the fishing trips with William.

But above all, she was most pleased to be Auntie Minnie to so many, particularly to the families of the late Albert (Violet) Dubnyk, Walter (Doreen) Popowich and Mervin (Edna) Dubynk. Even though they had a home in Yorkton, they remained true to their rural roots until William's sudden passing on November 26, 2001. In 2006, Minnie took up residence at the Eagle Stone Lodge in Kamsack and later transferred to the Yorkton Nursing Home.

Minnie was predeceased by her beloved husband, William; her parents; three sisters, Dorothy Korpan, Clara Bohayski and Anne Kulack; five brothers, Michael, Alfred, Nick, John and Dick.

The family would like to thank all the caregivers for their attentive care and compassion while Minnie was resident in Kamsack and Yorkton. Minnie and William were very much involved with the congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses in Yorkton. She will be missed by all. The funeral service will take place on Monday, August 31st at the Chapel of Bailey's Funeral Home with the interment taking place at Yorkton City Cemetery. Condolences may be emailed to the family at baileysfuneralhome@sasktel.net

KOTELKO - Zenon.

Dearly beloved son of Rose Jarman and the late Stephan Kotelko passed away on Sunday, May 22, 2005 at the age of 56 years after a courageous struggle with cancer. Zenon was born on February 1, 1949 in Saskatoon. He acquired his early education at Wakaw, SK, later moved to Saskatoon and attended King Edward School and City Park Collegiate. He enjoyed the 75th High School Reunion with his friends at CPC in 2003.

Zenon was the owner of and ran Hot Rod Cafe and Ice Cream Treats on Idylwyld Drive. Also owned Speed Shop, Radio Cab franchise, truck operator and owner, associated with motorways, sales rep with Sherwood Chev, and to the present owned Badass Jack's Cafe.

Zenon (nicknamed Zee Kay) was well known in the super-stock drag racing fraternity, both the USA and Canada, drag racing was the love of his life. He was an antique Hot Rod enthusiast, a member of the National Hot Rod Association, and won many trophies in his drag racing career. The greatest gift he had to give another was his unconditional love. He never held any grudges against anyone. Zenon was never judgmental; he always respected the opinions of others. He had a unique and mature sense of humour that he mixed with his wisdom. He was a loyal friend and valued his supportive buddies for their unwavering friendship; he appreciated their support throughout his illness.

In his youth he attended summer camp at Wakaw Green Grove and he enjoyed traveling. He spoke and understood the Ukrainian language and was a member of the Cathedral. My only precious son will be affectionately remembered by his gentle charm, his strength given always with hugs and kisses.

Zenon will be dearly missed by his beloved mother, Rose; numerous uncles, aunts, cousins; and his friend, JC. He was predeceased by his father, Stephan in 1985; his grandparents, George/Mary Werezak, George/Anne Kotelko; step-father, George Jarman in 2004.

Donations in Zenon's memory can be made to St. Paul's Hospital Palliative Care or to a charity of the donor's choice. Thanks to Dr. Ma, Dr. Stakiw, Dr. Bigsby and all the caregivers for their excellent care, to everyone for their thoughts and prayers, cards, phone calls, and special visits from as far away as California. The Prayer Service will be held on Friday, May 27, 2005 at 7:30 p.m. at Park Funeral Chapel (311 Third Avenue North, Saskatoon, SK). Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, May 28, 2005 at 10:00 a.m. at the Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral of the Holy Trinity (919 20th Street West, Saskatoon, SK). Officiating will be Rev. Fr. Taras Makowsky and Very. Rev. Fr. Bohdan Demczuk. Interment will take place in Woodlawn Orthodox Cemetery, Saskatoon, SK. Arrangements entrusted to James Werezak of PARK FUNERAL CHAPEL, 244-2103. .

Treasured Memory Of
ZENON G. KOTELKO (ZK)
February 1, 1949 - May 22, 2005

God knew that Zenon was suffering
That his super-stock fame racing, would be hard to race.
So he closed his weary eyelids
And whispered "Peace be thine".
My tribute to my beloved son:
Beside your grave, I often stand
With heart both crushed and sore,
God knows how much I miss you
He counts the tears I flow.
So I'll be brave dear Zenon
Any pray to God, that
When he calls me home to you
Your sweet smile will help guide the way.
My eternal love - mother Rose Jarman
