I have researched this family extensively trying to understand their connection to a historic building in Henry County which came to be known as the Old Pollard Inn. Michael Smith was a son of Nicholas Smith, a revolutionary war veteran, who moved to Henry County with a brother, Jacob, in 1785 from Old Frederick County, VA. - now Clarke County near Berryville. According to the property tax rolls, Michael held a tavern license as early as 1820. He purchased the property in 1816 from James Pringle, one of the original Justices of the Peace at the formation of Henry County. In 1839 he sold the property and his interest in his father Nicholas' estate to his brother, the very prominent merchant, Thomas Smith. Thomas consolidated his ownership of his father's estate by buying out the other children's interest. By reseraching these deeds I have been able to establish family relationships that otherwise would have been difficult as there were other Smiths living in Henry County at the time. Thomas in turn deeded the property to James Ireland Pollard in trust for his wife, Elizabeth Smith Pollard, who was Michael and Thomas' sister. The deed conveying the property to Thomas Smith listed Michael's residence as Hancock County, Kentucky while noting that he formerly was of Henry County.
I found cemetery information in Hancock County for both Michael and his wife: Michael Smith B: 4-22-1787 D: 9-13-1871; Sarah Smith D: 7-11-1882 Aged 84Y. A Hancock County History specifically mentions one child, George B: 1818 and his children but no others. In the Old Rockbridge Cemetery in Henry County there is buried one William Smith, son of Michael and Sarah, B: 6-17-1830 D: 3-28-1832. I do not know the names of all the other children. The 1830 Henry County Census shows 4 boys and 4 girls in the household. The 1850 Hancock County Census, the first to list the names of household members, gives John J. 21M, Joseph G. 16M, and Catherine 13F.
It's interesting that you state that Stephen married Gracie Scott. At first I thought she was another child of Nicholas Smith and Mary Jones, as she is buried in the same family plot, but this causes too many daughters to match biographical information on the family: 8 sons and three daughters. Gracie (tombstone actually reads Gracy Smith B: 1-13-1797 D: 5-25-1835) died before Stephen moved on to Missouri. I believe I have located him in Ralls County MO.
I have partial information on several other brothers and have found much information on Nicholas' father, Michael, who died in 1801. Nicholas was born in Germany June 4, 1759. His father and three brothers, Bartholomew, George and Nicholas, first settled in Frederick County MD. Bartholomew and Michael moved to Old Frederick County VA in 1772. They purchased land which became known as the Big Springs Plantation north of Berryville, VA. I don't know that the brothers immigrated from Germany at the same time as there are several dates indicated, but all within a few years.
I would be happy to share my documentation for this information if you are interested. Are you a descendent and is there any family lore about Michael operating a tavern in Henry County?
