My family John Otto Loehner from Numberg Germany may have left Liverpool in February 1858 Ship called Spain(maybe) he was married to a Josephone C Maguire listed as Irish. I do not know if they were married then. They did live in New Jersey in 1890 where Pop was born. Any info would be appreciated. Margaret Maguire - Loehner

Re: John Otto LOEHNER ?Liverpool 1858 > USA on the 'Spain'?
This information all ties together as John & Josephine had 4 children - Mary, Freida, and Caroline (known as Nina) she would have been the 10 month old baby. My husbands father Henry Otto was born in New Jersey in January 1890. I wonder does this mean that any family may have or now do use the MIS SPELLING of Lochner?? I an anxious to trace the family movements once the arrived in New York but not sure where to go from here.

Re: John Otto LOEHNER ?Liverpool 1858 > USA on the 'Spain'?
Sorry, slightly misleading - I said mis-spelt - meant the transcriber of the record mis-spelt (Mis-transcribed) not that they mis spelt it - old records and unusual name = mis-spelling!! This can happen quite a bit so any search/s you make should reflect that

Re: John Otto LOEHNER ?Liverpool 1858 > USA on the 'Spain'?
It might be worth considering other spellings which could have been adopted for convenience. Loehner could be spelt Lonher, with an umlaut, two little dots, over the "o" and the German pronounciation would be close to "Learner". People who did not understand the meaning of the umlaut could easily have called him "Loner" so he may have got fed up and decided to anglicise it for convenience, Lerner, Learner, Loner. This, together with mis-transcriptions, causes a lot of trouble and I have the impression it happened quite a lot in the States, particularly with German and Slavic names. Just a thought.

Re: John Otto LOEHNER ?Liverpool 1858 > USA on the 'Spain'?
Thank you so much for the hints. I knew some of the family when writing used the umlaut but the other spellings can be very helpful.
Many Thanks Margaret.

Re: John Otto LOEHNER ?Liverpool 1858 > USA on the 'Spain'?
Just another small point I have noticed, probably also mis-transcribing. You say he came from Numberg and whoever has looked at the passenger list also has Numberg. I guess this should be Nuernberg (or Nurnberg with umlaut, in other words Nuremberg of trials fame!). I seriously doubt you could find a Numberg anywhere in Germany, old or new, although there is a Naumberg not far from Leipzig in eastern Germany. If you have already spotted this - apologies. Good luck anyway.

Re: John Otto LOEHNER ?Liverpool 1858 > USA on the 'Spain'?
Hi, Yes it is Nuremburg but on the application for a passport the spelling was Numburg. I have discovered the exact name of our grandfather was Johann Otto Loehner. So lots of abreviations. I believe one of his grandfathers was Mayor of Nuremburg not sure which one.
Thank you so much for all your help it is very much appreciated.
Margaret.

Re: John Otto LOEHNER ?Liverpool 1858 > USA on the 'Spain'?
There was a ship, SS Spain, owned by the National Steam Navigation Line which sailed from Liverpool to New york via Queenstown (Cobh, Cork, Ireland) which would fit a lot of your "facts" - except for the fact that she did not make her maiden voyage until 1871! However thought I'd pass it on - just in case.

Re: John Otto LOEHNER ?Liverpool 1858 > USA on the 'Spain'?
Hi again,
I think your on to something as I have just managed to get his marriage certificate and he was married in 1880. I purchase any certificates that may be connected so just now in post I have received this. Mind you I have had some duff ones since I started.
Will let you know how I get on.
Thank you so so much. Margaret.
