Hello
Is their anyone in India offering volunteer services for look ups for genealogical purposes only, or who can answer some general questions:

1. Would there be a cemetery stone left or ever erected for military wives who died in Lucknow at Fort Garrison? I have her death record but would like that information.
2. What cemeteries are standing for burials of such persons during 1857/59 invasion of India in Lucknow region - would this be the Residency cemetery.
3. Seen listing of Residency cemetery burials online but my relative's wife is not listed but info confirmed by British Records/India office.

Sorry, I don't think I can help you. My great-uncle died in Poona, India in 1901. I have his grave site but I have never been able to find his wife who may have been with him in India. You mention seeing a listing of "Residency Cemetery". Would you be kind enough to tell me where I might find this listing?

Thank you,
Lois

Hi Lois:

Sure, after several years of trying to find information
I googled India Records and up popped a site to British Records with India files, as it seems Britain held these records, which makes sense since they sent the army in there.

Inside Fort Lucknow is a cemetery - don't know the name - but when you google fort lucknow it comes up residency - so I assume again it was a forted town with once cemetery in the so called residency.

This is their website, you put in name of whom you look for
and try various spellings if needed and don't enter first names as a try itself as more names come up - it helped me! I tried full names, then just last name so I could see
anyone with that name.

You have to mark where you search, Bengal or Bombay...

When I could not find ALL info I emailed the contact told them my tale from Canada and they emailed me my kin's burial and death information - I even knew what she died of, just not what they did with her....I assume in a war time they buried her directly in the Fort at Lucknow in Bengal India.

Best of luck
Sherri

Replying out of curiousity - I have a Smith relative who I believe was buried in Lucknow, and one of her three marriages was to a Stephenson in Madras. She began life as Rebecca Tristram, (1857 Madras), married Uriah Stephenson and had four sons and a daughter, after Uriah's death, married Charles Smith, a further two sons, Charles and Hedley in the 1880;s, after the death of Charles, she married Eernest Draper and I believe, died herself in Lucknow in 1899. If any possible link, please be in touch.
