Hi! My great-grandfather was Denis Spelman (1832-1908). He was supposedly from County Clare, Ireland. He married Margaret Hill and had five children: Gertrude (my grandmother), William, John, Lillian & May. They lived in Brooklyn, NY in the early 1900s. William had two sons that I know about, Arthur (1901-1974) and George(1907-1968). I don't have any Henrys in my Spelman family tree. Sounds like you are related to me if you have the same Denis Spelman as a relative. If you have any info about the children of these Spelmans. I'd love to hear about them.

This is Roanld Spelman living in La Jolla CA. George J Spelman is my father and my uncles were William (moved to Chicago at an early age) Arthur and Clinton all deceased. I'm hoping to fill in the open areas. Denis (my great grandfather) served in the Union army during the Civil War about 1862-65 and died in Ohio. I'd like very much to find out more. Ron Spelman

Hello Cousin Ron; Clinton Spelman (1910-1996) wrote a letter in 1987 to my father (Herbert Hill Clifton (1912-2001), son of Gertrude Spelman (1873-1962)and Charles Clifton (1874-1969)) which contained copies of several documents from the civil war service of Denis Spelman, his disability pension requests after the war, and the many health problems he experienced later in life. There are also notorized papers containing details about his marriage to Margaretta Anna Hill and their children. Let me know, what info you need to fill in your family tree and I'll see if I can provide it. I wish I had information about the Spelman family in Ireland and/or where Margaret Hill's family came from.

Hi, my name is Alison and my grandfather is Arthur F., brother of William, Clinton, George. My mom is Ann Spelman-Dietz. Her twin, James is deceased, January 1982, sister Mary also deceased, March, 1989. Sister Rosalie, .Now that my mom is 85, she would love to get her family history. She knows that Uncle Clinton did do one but we have never seen it. Now that my mom is 85 she would love to see her family history and so would her children. Apparently, the Spelman clan were not too close. Mom said they didn't see the cousins too often. Would love to hear from you.

Hi Allison........I'm Ron Spelman and live in La Jolla Ca. since 1972...my middle name is Arthur no doubt named after my uncle Arthur who I remember fondly. Uncle Clinton did some research and traced his grandfather Denis Spelman...he's the one who came from Irelenad and served through the Civil war and is buried in Ohio in a veterans cemetary. I'm delighted to hear from a family member and will send you more info at a slightly later time. I remember your mom, Anne (although the memory is vague) so please give her my best. Enjoy Thanksgiving and you'll hear from me very soon....best to you Ron Spelman ps I believer your mom was a little closer to my brother George who died a year ago. I stille have three siblings on LI....Mariannne, Cathleen and Bob..

Our Spelman family originated with John Spellman born 1802 in Co. Mayo, Ireland. John's wife was Catherine "x" and his three children were Patrick,Bridget and Michael. John and Catherine were married around 1830 and their children were all born before 1835. When Michael was a few months old, John left for the U.S. and never returned for them. Instead he married Ann Austin from Co. Leitrim and had two children born in Vermont, Mary Ann (Mullarky) and James. My husband, William is descended from James. Northern Illinois was the home of John Spellman and his new family. He and Ann are buried there. Needless to say this became a scandalous affair when the children from Ireland came in search of him.

His Ireland family eventually settled in Iowa and then some in California and some in Missouri.

If you Spelman family was Irish, or Catholic, or has a connection to any of these places I mentioned, let me know. I have been in contact with two descendants of Bridget working out their line of the family.

The family dropped an "l" in the Spel(l)man name.
