I am searching for my paternal roots. My grandfather's name was changed in the US to Wishneff, but his brothers became Vishnev and Vishneff so original was something like Vishnievski. His name was Samuel, son of Chaim Tevye and Sarah. He had 4 brothers,Max,Lou,Motka and Avrum. The first two came with him to Philadelphia in 1913 but the latter two never left Russia. My grandmother's family name was Katzman. Parents were Yonkel and Batsheva from somewhere near Kiev. My father's older sister was born in Shpola and younger sister in Ekaterinaslav. I'm looking for any family contacts.

I am trying to find information on a Borach Katzman, born in the 1850s (?) in Mogolov, Gaberna, Russia (?) married to Zelma Heller, father of Sonya (Molly) Katzman.

My father, Chanan Katzman, was born in Mogolov . . . I believe his father, Laban Katzman, was one of 11 (eleven) brothers. Laban's parents were Shlomo and Freidle D'voshe.

Faye,
Thank you for responding. I have very little information on my Katzman line except . . .
Borach Katzman Abt. 1850-1913? married Selma Heller Abt. 1850-1912? both born Mogilev. Borach had a brother who was a land surveyer.
Borach and Selma (not really sure even if these are the right names!) had several children including:
Chasheh Katzman (probably not even the right spelling) who lived in Mogilev and is believed not to have immigrated with other siblings to the U.S. We know he married and had at least 2 children but do not know their names.
Mary Katzman immigrated to U.S. and married Isaac Steinbach but what her name was prior to immigration I don't know.
Harry Katzman immigrated to U.S. and married Bessie Stone. He may have had a different name prior to immigration and was born about 1890 in Mogilev of course.
Mayer Katzman did not immigrate from Mogilev and married and had 2 children names unknown to us.
Sarah Mollie Katzman who immigrated and married Louis Altshuler (my line). She was born 10/1880 about in Mogilev.
An unknown Katzman child who may have died in childhood from measles in Mogilev.
I know nothing of Borach's parents or siblings, but I thought maybe siblings might name children after aunts and uncles and grandparents who had died so maybe you might see common names with Katzman in your line?
Let me know if there is any possible connection here. Thank you.

I am also related to Katzmans from Mogilev (russia/belarus). My great-grandmother was Mary Katzman (b. 1888) and she had 11 siblings (all from Mogilev), 7 of which came with her to NYC in the early 1900s. I don't know her parents names. Two sisters and maybe a brother stayed behind in Mogilev but i don't know their names. We could be related...

Ok. I do have a Mary Katzman in my tree. I have her married to Isaac Steinbach with Sarah Steinbach, Selma Stein and Benjamin Steinbach as her children. Mary's parents were Borach Katzman and Selma Heller according to family information but no documentation. Mary Katzman had many siblings some of whom immigrated to this country around turn of century but not all. I have Mary ending up somewhere in Wilmington DE. Does this fit at all? Siblings include Harry, Chasheh (maybe?) Mayer and a sister Sarah or Sonya Mollie and others.

I now have a lot of information on Katzman's from Mogilev (Selets). Please contact me and I can see if your info matches up with what i have.
Also, your relative named Mary was probably originally named Maryashe / Maryache / Mariache.
Thanks, -Heather

I was looking over old message board posts and realized I can match Chanan Katzman, father Laban, grandparents Shlomo and Freidle D'vosh to people in my tree of Katzmans from town of Selets / Celetz in Mogilev. I would like to exchange information, please contact me.
Thanks, -Heather
