According to Paxtons Annals of Platte County, it list a Judge Henry B. Mayo who came from KY in about 1841 and died in 1864. It list his wife Mary McGuire and 6 children, sons being Henry Jeff, George W., and Jackson J. It makes no reference to another Henry B. in his line.

Another entry shows a Henry Burt Mayo (ii) marrying Mary Catherine (Lanter) Kilgore. A Kilgore was her first husband and she married Henry Sept 23, 1883 (this marraige is noted in 2 different places in the book as 1883, not 1885) after her first husband died. Says they had 4 children. Nothing more on this Henry. You would think they are from the same family but it doesn't seem to tie in, at least in this book. But this is written by a historian who lived and recorded things as they happened in his lifetime, so even he admits there could be mistakes.

Mary Catherine Lanter is the dghtr of Capt Davis Lanter and Elizabeth Bowring. There is much info about the Capt including he had a large farm near Farley (my hometown). Elizabeth Bowring was the dghtr of Scitha Bowring and Peter Bowring. Just a note, there is a road named Lanter Lane just outside of Farley.

Hope this helps. If you want add'l on the other Henry, let me know. I will look at a few more sources later also.

Charlie,

Henry Jeff. (may be Jeffery or Jefferson), married 1st,Jan. 3, 1850, Mary E. Shackelford, who died, and he married Sept 20, 1854, Ruth j. Phelps.

Words written by Paxton...

"My Mayo was a man of good education and, in some respects, remarkable brilliance. He wrote and published some excellent poems. But he was addicted to the cup. Yet he threw his whole soul into the cause of temperance, and labored faithfully for the Good Templars. He went west and died, leaving a son Richard, who married Laura Mason."

There is also a Henry J. Mayo (ii) listed as a child of Jackson Mayo. No DOB listed for him but child before him was born in 1860.

So not to busy up the message board, I will reply directly to you if I find further on Henry B.

Chuck, I forgot to ask is the one son Henry J mentioned as being there in Platte, Mo. or was he still in Ky. Or, is his age mentioned or who did he marrie. I am trying to rule out another Henry J Mayo. If you could also find a death record on the Henry B married Kilgore that would be great. I think he is the man I have looked for several years.

Thanks Chuck

I am famillier with the Judge Henry B Mayo. I did not know he went to Platte County. He was on the house of ledgeslation in Ky and was of well repute in ky. He is a cousin to the Henry B Mayo I am looking for. It could be that the other is mine and went there because he had relation there. The other possibillity is this is Judge Henry's grandson. Please see is you can find out more. My Henry also had a brother named James G or maybe J. You did good!

As I was copying some online census records for Lee Township, I found Henry B. Mayo and his family on the 1900 census. I remembered several posts on the name so I thought I would pass the info on.

1900 MO Census-Platte County-Lee Township
Sheet No. 4-Enumerated on June 15, 1900

Dwelling 83

Henry B. Mayo- Head of H.-born June 1856; age 43; m'd 16 yrs.; born in MO, father born in KY, mother born in VA; occupation-Farmer

Mary C.- wife-born April 1854, age 46; mother of 7 children, 6 living; her and both parents b. in MO;

William - son-born March, 1884; age 16; occup. farm laborer

Ruth E. daughter-born Oct. 1886; age 13; at school

George D. -son-born July, 1889, age 10, farm laborer

Charley C. -son-born Feb 1892, age 8, at school

Pearl Bird(?) grand-daughter-born Oct 1895,age 4

All but gdaughter could read. All but gdaughter and Henry could write. All could speak english. Says it was a farm and it was rented rather than owned.

Forgot to add "years married" on both Henry and Mary. States 16.

The gdaughters name is hard to make out. I am pretty sure it starts with "Bi", and my best guess is Bird.

That's about it.

Chuck

My ggg-grandfather was Henry Jefferson Mayo (born abt 1830, Ky), whose father was Judge Henry Burke Mayo. Henry Jefferson's son was my great-grandfather Henry Burton Mayo (born 16 Jun 1855, Missori, who married Mary C. Lanter. Mary was married first at age 15 to a Kilgore. They had no children. I have a picture of Mary and Burt, and a picture of Davis and Elizabeth Lanter, her parents. Feel free to contact me if you want further information.

Hello! My great-grandfather was Henry Burton Mayo. I have a copy of his death certificate. He was born June 16, 1855 in Missouri, died September 19, 1926 in Missouri. My grandfather George Davis Mayo was his son, born July 4, 1889 in Farley, Platte, Mo and died February 17, 1941 in Kansas City, Clay County. Henry Burton's father was Henry Jefferson Mayo, born abt 1830 in Kentucky. I don't have a death date on Henry J. And yes, Henry Burton married Mary C. Kilgore, her first husband's last name. She was born Mary C. Lanter and the daughter of Davis and Elizabeth Lanter

I was mistaken about Mary C. Lanter and her first husband Murren Kilgore. They had two children.
