My great, great grandmother is Caridad Grave de Peralta. She was born in Cuba about 1847 and married Jose Parra about 1863. She came to the US in 1890 and died in Tampa, Fl on 11/17/1937. Is there any connection with your family?

Atentamente,
Francisco Pantín

PARRA family in Tampa, FL in 1900 census

Mark, this may be a bizzare coincidence, but I have been researching my Macias ancestors on the 1900 census of Hillsborough County, Florida and sandwiched in between two of my Macias families on the census is a Parra family, but the head of house first name is obliterated (He is 39 yrs. old, b. in Cuba, married for 20 years). Ages don't line up with your Parras but maybe they are related. Wife is Maria (38 yrs. old, b. in Cuba), children are Luis (b. Cuba), Juan (b. Cuba), Lena(?)b. in Fla, as are the rest of the children:, Amparo, Ophelia, & Pedro M. The reason I am aware of them is because my Macias family also named a daughter "Amparo" and probably named her after Amparo Parra next door. Email me and let me know if you want me to send you a scan of that census page, it's a copy of the original from microfilm.

Mark, besides knowing some Parras, I also knew a Grave de Peralta family from the Cuban town of Holguin. You might try to research the two oldest churches in that town for your great grandmother Caridad. She might have been from Holguin. On the otheer hand, I might have some information about both the Grave de Peralta and Parra families in a Manzanillo - another Cuban town in the same region : get yourself a cuban map-- but as the book is olf fashioned and written in a non- historiographical way, it does not have name indexes.
Every time I want to find a data I have to browse again and again; As I am doing my own research, so slowly... It will take me time to find it for you. But I promise to post your name in the monitor, so to remember it.
Nevertheless keep posting it. I knew a certain angelita Grave de Peralta, born ca. 1940. We went to school together.
The churches in Holguin are: The Iglesis Catedral de San Isidoro (Cathedral Church of Saint Isidoro), and the Iglesia de San Jose. There telephone numbeers might be available at the Catholic Archidiosesis of Miami, whose nmber I dont know.
Good luck, Marta

Unfortunately neither the 1900 Census not the death certificate for Josw Parra (husband of Caridad) mention the specific place in Cuba. Jose died of tuberculosis at age 52 on 6/6/1918 and was a cigarmaker in Tampa. He is buried at Woodlawn Cemetery in Tampa, Fl. Caridad actually died in Manhattan, New York City on 11/17/1937 and her body transported to Tampa (also Woodlawn) for burial. She had been in the United States for 44 years according to her death certificate. Caridad's parents were Jose Maria Grave de Peralta (from Cuba, place unknown) and Juana Alegre (from Cuba, place unknown). Caridad was a dressmaker and died of heart disease at age 91. Sorry I can't provide more. It's always difficult to get information when the trail leads to Cuba.

The Jose Parra that was married to Caridid Grave de Peralta was born about 1837 in Cuba and died in Tampa, FL on 9/18/1905. According to the 1900 Census, he had been in the US 10 years. Jose and Caridad had a son also named Jose who was born in Cuba about 3/1866 and died 6/6/1918 in Tampa, Fl. Perhaps the Juan Parra y Grave de Peralta in Key West was a relative (cousin?) to Jose Jr. Caridad'a parents were Jose Maria Grave de Peralta and Juana Alegre (dates unknown). I'm not quite sure how Juan connects in. Thank you for the information, though.

Marta,
IÂ’m very sorry but I donÂ’t read Spanish very well. But I think I can get an idea what you are asking for. I hope you read English better than I can read Spanish!

The Parra family I found on the 1900 Census Hillsborough County, Florida, is living at 1420 14th Avenue in Tampa, Florida. The district is known as the “Ybor City” district. On the census, this is the 20th Precinct, Enumeration District 69, page 369b.

Parra **** head, white, m,age 39,married 20 yrs, born Cuba father b. ****, mother b. Cuba
Maria wife, f, age 38, married 20 yrs, 9 children, 7 living, born Cuba, father b. Italy, mother b. Cuba
Luis son m - b. Aug age 16, single, born Cuba, father b. Cuba, mother b. Cuba
Juan son m - b.Sep age 13, single, “ “ “
Elena dau. f - b. Aug, age 9, single “ “ “
Amparo, dau, f - b. Feb age 5, single “ “ “
Ophelia, dau, f - b. --- age 4 mos, “ “ “
Pedro M, son, m - b.--- age 18, single “ “ “

I donÂ’t know why Pedro is listed last even though he is 18 years old. The first name of the head of house, Mr. Parra, is illegible. Also, birthplace of Mr. Parra's father is illegible. Can't tell if it's Italy or Cuba. I will send you by email an image of the original census page so you can see for yourself. Hope this helps.

Estimado Nicolas:

Saludos

There were Grave de Peralta en Holgui, Oriente Province, Cuba. One of them was a General during the Wars of Independence. The family had a high social, cultural and economic status.
Also, take into conosideration that most of the Cubans found in Tampa, New York and Key West were exiles from the 2 Cuban Wars of Independence: from 1968 to 1989.
Some in Oriente lost everything during the first War, 1868 -1878; thus the wave of exiles that settled in those american cities. Some returned to Cuba: i.e., My husband grandmother was born in New Orleans, and returned to Cuba when she was barely seven... Others had to stay.

The problem posed by learnibg about any period of cuban history, is that most books are written in spanish. If you have at least some knowledge of the language, youe can browse through several history books. Libreria Universal in Miami, and Libreria La Moderna Poesia have them. also if you are in Miami, you can go to the Public Library; they have them, the best kept in the special Colections. there is an Enciclopedia Cubana and the series : Cuba Economia y sociedad, written by the late Levi Marrero. The language is simple and easy to nderstand. and maybe an older relative might help explaining or translating. Older relatives are very valuable sources of info. the only book written in english is Hugh thomas's Cuba; however I don't know if he mentions Grave de Peralta. Marta

My great-grandmother was Venturosa GRAVE DE PERALTA y AGUILERA, daughter of Antonio GRAVE de PERALTA and Amelia AGUILERA. According to my information, this family was from Holguín, but Venturosa lived in Guantánamo with her husband Andrés MARTIN (pronounced MARTÉN in Cuba) y DE CASTRO. Andrés Martin (Martén) de CASTRO was murdered in Campechuela, near Manzanillo, in 1902, because of a series of articles critical of the Guardia Rural that he had published in the newspaper "La Tribuna". Venturosa remained a widow after that. She and Andrés had two children: Andrés and Maria Luisa Martin y GRAVE de PERALTA. Andrés jr. became a doctor and moved to Palma Soriano where he married Blanca PICAZO y RIVAS. Maria Luisa remained in Guantánamo until exile in the US; she was married to Luis DEVILLE from Guantánamo. I always heard that my grandfather was related to a GRAVE de PERALTA from Santiago de Cuba who was a dentist (in the 1940's and 50's).

If anyone finds a connection and knows anything about this history, please, let me know. I would be most grateful. I can also share more information about this branch of the GRAVE de Peraltas.

Mary,
Thanks for asking about my Perez family in Tampa. Unfortunately, there were many many Perez families in Tampa around the time my folks came here, the late 1890's and early 1900's. None of your folks' names are in my family. My great-grandfather Alfredo Perez (b. 1859) came to Tampa in the late 1890's with wife Juana Maria Sosa. They had only 2 males that survived past infancy. One, my grandfather Justo Alfredo Perez b. 1896 had only one child, my dad. The other son of Alfredo was Ricardo Luis Perez b. 1903 in Tampa. He had only two daughters.. The other chidlren of Alfredo Perez and Juana Maria Sosa were Amelia, Juana Maria, Inez, and Otilia. I've accounted for all their children as well. My great-grandfather's parents were Vicente Perez (b. 1835 d. 1889) and Carmen Morales (b. 1841 d. 1920). As far as I know, they never left Cuba, although I have a suspicion that Carmen may have been in Key West when she died. I know nothing else of Vicente & Carmen other then their exact birth and death dates, and the names of their 16 children, which include my great grandfather Alfredo. Of those 16 children, I've only been able to trace descendants of one, Maria Irmenia Perez, sister of Alfredo. And this is only because Maria Irmenia Perez (she married Eladio Lima) had a daughter who married a son of Alfredo (Ricardo Luis), a first cousin marriage. Without the birth year of your Priscilla, I can't really tell if she could be a daughter of one of Alfredo's brothers. (But since I don't have any info on those brothers other than their names and birth dates, all I can do is rule out Priscilla on the basis of her birth year, or say, yes, her age would allow it.) All this you can see at my web page at http://www.members.aol.com/landolutz Sorry I couln't be of more help! -Dan-O

To Helene, I saw your message on the board and wonder if you could help me find my ancestors. My grandfather's family was from Santiago de Cuba. His name was Dametrio Ernesto Despaigne Grave de Peralta and his brother was Leoncio Despaigne Grave de Peralta. Please let me know if you know anyone that was related to them.

Hi, Danny:
I am very interested in your Perez and Sosa lines. Do you know if the family originated in Sagua la Grande Cuba? My great grandmother was Rosa Santos Sosa, and she had several siblings, but my great uncle only remembers Juana, Isidoro, Jose, and someone they called ChiChi. His favorite cousin was Inez Sosa, on his mother's side of the family. He remembers visiting his mother's little sister. My great grandfather Manuel Perez Hernandez married Rosa Santos Sosa. Rosa Santos y Sosa was born 9-4-1888. Could these lines be related somehow, according to your database of names? Oh, and I have Perez in Tampa, but he didn't emigrate there until 1950's. Thanks, luv2bmami@yahoo.com
