Charles, thanks for the information you posted. Your post has given me the correct spelling for what we thought was Cashut which I now believe is Kaschau in today's Kosice (today's Slovakia). I do have a photo or 2 showing the medals and if you'd like, I'll email them to you if you send me your email address. I found a medal today that is probably the "elongated bell" I was referring to. After some more searching on the net, I find we were also spelling Baranya Megye incorrectly (we had Baranza). I see that Baranya and Megye are both referred to as counties. I would think that Baranya is the region since it is large and that Megye means counties within that region?

I have subscribed to several Roots-L lists and I appreciate you listing them. I've been to Cydi's List but not having much luck finding ships by country. I'll need to go through all the A-Z ships names. If you (or anyone else) know of a site that has ship's passenger lists from Hungary (or Austria), that would be a big help. This ancestor is also of Italian heritage.

Joseph Tomas TOLMICH/TALMACH, TALMADGE was born somewhere in Turkey. Also trying to find data for him in Turkey (birth), Hungary (lived), Austria (military), New Mexico (Civil War)and Colorado (Army, death) - wow, that is a lot of research.

Looking for data on the Austian-Cashut war. Ancestor Joseph Tomas Tolmich, Talmach, Talmadge served in this war prior to emigrating to the US, to Colorado, about 1849. I cannot find the name Cashut anywhere on the web. It appears this war would have been prior to 1849, the approx. date of his emigration.
Joseph has many medals on his coat in photos but so faint (but not small) we can't recognize where they are from. He also served in the Civil War from New Mexico so some of them may be from that war. Are there any identifying marks on Austria's medals that would help me? I have seen several of the tri-fold medals for various services accomplished but they don't look like the ones in our photos. Right side of coat shows writing above top of medal and below that horizontal bar with sides coming down into a point.

There are other medals beneath that and an emblem beneath the medal that looks like a very elongated bell.

On the left side of the coat are 2 rather large stars, one beneath the other.

If anyone has a link on the web to the ships that left Turkey or Austria abt 1849, that would be great.

It is unlikely that your story has anything to do with Kosice (Kassa, Kaschau). Rather I believe the lead is to the war of Hungarian independence of 1848. The leader of the Hungarian independence movement in this war (of 1848/49) was Lajos (Ludwig) von Kossuth (your Cashut!). The Austrians, weakened by their own uprising in Vienna of 1848, first contracted the Ban of Croatia, Joseph von Jellasich, to march on Budapest. After the Austrians recovered from their own revolution and enlisted the Tsar of Russia to squeeze the Hungarians from east and west, the Hungarian uprising of Kossuth was crushed and many of the Hungarian military leaders were executed. Kossuth and his closest aides and soldiers fled to Turkey (!!) where they lived for a while (from 1849). However, Kossuth later made triumphant visits to England and the United States (!) where he received ovations as a champion of liberty. Kossuth then lived in exile in England and Italy, and died in Turin.

Kossuth is one of the most popular figures of the Hungarian history. A lot has been published about him. He himself wrote the "Memoirs of my Exile." I wonder whether your ancestors might be mentioned there.

Try to post your query at the Hungarian board and ask for historians to help you further.

I am also looking for information on Joseph Talmich (or Tolmich, Talmadge or Tolmiche), my great grandfather. I have an article from the Genealogical Society of Hispanic America about him, but am looking for other family members or information.

My husband is also the great grandson of Joseph Thomas Talmadge (Tolmich, Talmich, Tolmiche,etc.) The different names on census records have made it difficult researching. Joseph and Guadalupe Benavides, his wife are buried in the St Marys cemetery just outside Walsenburg, Colorado. We do have a couple of pictures of him. My husband has a trip planned in March to visit a second cousin who he has never met(a Talmadge) in Okalahoma, where he hopes to gain additonal family history info. As you may or may not know, this family has Native American blood. The distant cousin In Oklahoma is one of the very few in this family who still speak the Apache tongue. We had always been told there were two Talmadge/Tolmich brothers who came to U.S. soil in the 1840's. According to this cousin there were more. Stay tuned......

My husbands trip went absolutely wonderful! Not sure you are aware, but there is a family reunion of the Tolmich/Talmadge/Tolmiche family planned in Norman Okalahoma the end of May 2012. If you are interested, I can put in touch with the organizers.

I also have pictures I can e-mail you. My husband and our 3rd son made the journey and they were amazed at family resemblences and these two men are SECOND cousins!
