DAYTON CEMETERY, DAYTON, INDIANA

Can anyone help me find out where the list of persons buried in Dayton Cemetery, Dayton, Indiana can be located or who I might contact to find the grave locations of two people I believe are buried there?

I was in contact about two or three years ago with the trustee of Sheffield Township and she told me at that time that the Dayton, Indiana cemetery books were in the hands of the Historical Society or Genealogical Society but I have never been able to ascertain exactly where they are nor do I know whom to contact to ask for information. There are only a few of the cemetery listings for Dayton Cemetery online and I have already checked those.

One person I am looking for who is buried in the cemetery in Dayton, Indiana is Ada Linn, her obituary from the Lafayette, IN paper says she is buried in that cemetery. I am also looking for the possibility that her daughter Cora Bailey might also be buried in Dayton cemetery.

Any information or suggestions would be helpful.

Thank you. Sharon Parrish

Hi Sharon,
I will see if I have a photo of these tombstones at home.
Will send a note later.
The years would be helpful and you can also post an obituary
on this board too. Just change the little drop down box when
you post it.

Hi,

Thanks so much, I really appreciate your help.

I know that Ada Linn died on April 7, 1934 in Onarga, Iroquois County, Illinois but she is buried in Dayton Cemetery. (Her first husband Frank Brickler is also buried there, I have already located his grave but he died in 1916 and Ada is not buried by him.)

As for Cora Bailey, she died sometime after 1951, she may not be buried in Dayton but I want to rule out that possiblity as we don't know where she went after her second husband died in Onarga, Illinois in 1951. Cora's birth child (by her first husband Scott Dorton, the child was adopted into another family when she was very young) is a relative of mine and I am doing some ongoing research for her. The one thing we have not been able to find out yet is when or where Cora Brickler Bailey died so I am exploring all possibilities.

Thanks again.

I was interested in your posting. First, I thought the Dayton Cemetery was in Clinton County. I went there in July 2003 to try to find Aaron S. Bennett's grave. Never did find it. Glad to know it is located in Tippecanoe County.

I am interested in your Ada Linn. Was Linn her maiden name, or married name? Do you know which Linns she was from? My gg grandparents were Thomas and Rachel Leymon Linn and my g grandparents were John and Druscilla Linn Linn. John's parents were James and Mary Morrison Linn and Druscilla's parents were Thomas and Rachel. Thomas and James were brothers. Thomas and Rachel are buried in Chatsworth, Livingston Co., IL and John and Druscilla in Piper City, Ford Co., IL. One of John and Druscilla's granddauthers, Myrtle Becker, is buried in Onarga. Their parents were Andrew and Martha Poke Linn who came to Beech Creek, PA from Ireland.

Do any of these names sound familiar to you?

Hi,

One reason I knew that Dayton Cemetery was in Tippecanoe County was because my oldest sister lives not too far from Dayton.

As for Ada Linn, Linn was not her maiden name, she had toots in Clinton and Tippecanoe Counties, her maiden name was Hayden, she first married a Brickler, he died and then she married a James Frank Linn, I don't know very much about James Frank Linn but I think he might also have lived in Tippecanoe County earlier and that he had had another wife and family before he went to Onarga, Illinois, but unfortunately I can't absolutely identify him as to which Linns he belonged to.

I have a death notice on James Frank Linn but unfortunately it doesn't say much about him, it only says he was a barber by trade and that he was born in Mace, Indiana on September 6, 1851 and that his body was taken to Lafayette for burial, he died in March 1934 in Onarga, Illinois.

Sorry I can't give you more information on the Linns.

Sharon,
I didn't find your family stones in my photo collecton.
There are some of the family names at McDole/Lauramie
Baptist cemetery. Most of these stones are online on
the Find-A-Grave site. They might help or add
to your puzzle. The newspapers often just put
a city and didn't spell out the exact cemetery.
I have found this in several obituaries.

Dayton also sits close to the county line.
Maybe your friend can make the trip into the libraries.
If not the Tippecanoe County Genealogy Society is
willing to help anyone with family research.
A research form is on our site.

Sharon:
Thanks for the info you did give me. This is a good start.

That Dayton Cemetery is huge. I think I looked at every tombstone, but some of them were unreadable so didn't find Aaron Bennett. I went from there to Rossville which is in Clinton Co., I guess that is why I thought it was in Clinton.

Only on Findagrave. I had a couple more burials than were listed, but I have added them now. I will see if I can get the photos you requested. There is also Brady, Laura B. Hill (listed twice; I will see if I can resolve the discrepancy). It has been raining, so I'll see if I can get the pics tomorrow.--Susan
