Can anyone tell me the most likely burial site for an unidentified body found in the river near Brusley in 1858? My gggrand father drowned when he fell off a boat on a trip from New Orleans to Catahoula Parish. The body was identified as John Dosher, by papers in his wallet, but we have never been able to find out what happened to the body.
Any suggestion appreciated.

HI...THIS MAY HELP YOU In your search: St. John the Baptist Cemetery is located In Brusly, Louisiana, in West Baton Rouge Parish. It is very close to the Missisisippi River.

My great Great Grandmother Eleanore Tullier BROUSSARD was buried there in 1848, and her husband Dominique BROUSSARD in 1854...so I do KNOW the cemetery was in existence then, and it still exists today and is in remarkedly good condition.

I imagine Mr. MOUCH [ the sexton] may have some info on the burial or be able to help you...his family have been the caretakers for the cemetery for many many years, at least 3 generations.

St. John the Baptist Catholic Church is located at 462 South Kirkland Drive [ River Road] P. O. BOX 248 BRUSLY, LA. 70719. You might want to write them and ask about your burial that possibly is there. I don't know of any other cemeteries that were in existence in 1858, unless it was St. Joseph Cemetery in downtown Baton Rouge, East Baton Rouge Parish. But I'd doubt that he'd be buried there.

Unfortunately there are no published lists of those buried in West Baton Rouge cemeteries. But now there is a list of all those cemeteries and their locations, addresses to be found at www.historicriverroad.org . Perhaps the cemeteries will help you with this query.

If he was dead near Brusly, he may have been buried in the St. John the Baptist Catholic Church cemetary in Brusly. Unfortunately, the original cemetary for this church was consumed by the river around 1860. His grave could have been among those consumed. I have a book listing all of the graves in the present-day cemetary, and can find no mention of John Dosher

The book that I have, "St. John the Baptist Catholic Church Cemetary" lists all of the graves of those buried in the cemetary. It also contains each grave, and the birth and death dates. It was published in 1990, but doesn't include the newer graves of those in the mausoleum.

I checked the index for "Morris" but there are none listed. Only one "Morrison". Sorry!

The book that I have doesn't necessarily list the names of everyone buried in Brusly; only those Catholics buried at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church cemetary. Unfortunately, there isn't a William Eckles listed. Sorry!

You might want to try the Catholic Diocese office in Baton Rouge; they should have records of people buried at other locations in surrounding areas. Good luck!
