Suggestions for a Map program

Can anyone suggest a good map program? I need Sweden, Germany, Denmark and the USA, probably others.
I have Family Tree Maker and that has BING (not good) and you have to be connected to the internet to use the function. I am not sure exactly what I want, other than to show the places where my ancestors lived.
Thanks

I'm not sure this is what you want, but thought I would share what I have done, in some cities where my ancestors lived.

I searched for and found maps of the era. Then using photo editing software, I added pins for important locations - the house where my great-grandfather was born, the factory where he worked and met my great-grandmother, the Church where they were married.

A snippet of the map attached. In my tree, I have a legend which gives more detail about the locations.

For me, the historical map has more value than a modern map where street names have changed or borders or country names have disappeared.

What a wonderful idea. That will work, until I know what I want! I have looked at Bing and Google Earth but that is not what I want. Your idea is super. I need Sweden, Germany and USA for starters.
More details are welcome.

I've found good detail historic maps for the US at
http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/pmhtml/panmap.html
Same site also has some Canadian maps.

I Googled extensively to find what I wanted.

Edit: don't forget that you may need a map of Austria or the Austria-Hungary empire, or even France, depending on when your family lived in the area.

2nd edit to remove a link which seems to be in violation.

Go to a good book store (if you can find one still in business) and purchase a good road map, preferably one that is spiral bound with 100 or so pages. These maps may have to be ordered. For rural areas consult country specific topographic maps. In Norway I get detailed maps from the Norwegian map making division, which is just like the US Geographic Survey and I suspect that every country has such a division. Contact groups like, the Swedish Genealogical Society of Minnesota, for ideas, you may be supprised at the number of old maps they have accumulated over the years. I also scan paper maps into my computer and using software place electronic pins on places they live.

Thanks for that suggestion. What I am really looking for are maps for the time period people lived. I was hoping that there was some kind of computer program (other than Bing and Google) The Gen Society here in Norrtälje has old maps I know. I have a map from 1750 of Kalmar län but it is big. I was just wishing for a map program.
Guess I have lots of work to do,Thanks!

Search the internet for "genealogy mapping" and you'll find lots of options.
