Hi. I posted in the Arad section, and was told to also try the general. I am looking for information to do with the surname Fogarassy. My grandfather's name was Elmer Fogarassy, and I believe he was born in Transylvania, or Budapest. I don't know the year they came to Canada, but it was either during 1940's or 1950's. I was told that there is an area called Fogaras or something close to that. Any other information would be able to provide, or somewhere I could search would be appreciated. Thank you!

I am also researching Elmer Fogarassy from Cluj, Romania. Let me know if we are on the same track.

The name comes from Făgăraş (in hungarian Fogaras, in german Fogarasch). It is the name of a city, an area, a mountain and a former county. Now the population of the city is mainly romanian, but in the past there were many transylvannian saxons (germans), hungarians and jews. Your grandfather or his ancestors were shorely from this city or its sorroundings. His given name, Elmer, is probably an english adaptation of another name. A posibility is that it came from Elemer, a very common hungarian name. The name Fogarassy is also hungarian. I will give you more information if you tell me what exactly you want to know.

All we know of the Grandfather is that he was born Elemer Fogarassy on Mar 28 1927 in Cluj, Romania. He immigrated at some point to England where he married Ernasteina Regeisberger. That is it! I have no clue how to do the reserch in Romania so I don't know how to find his family. The history of the name and geography was extremely interesting. Thank you! Patty

Dear Patty, The general rules in Romanian state archives, where the vital records are kept, is that allowed for free research only the records elder than 100 years. So for more anyone will need Elemer's parents name. It would be great to have his faith/religion also. I have done a slight research on Fogarasi/Fogarasy/Fogarassy families and have "digitizedd" a lot of (Hungarian) family history books and magazines, obituaries, vital records registers from the area. Maybe able to help a bit... Best wishes, Janos - from Transylvania (Romania)

Hi party! My grandfather was also named Elmer Fogarassy born in Transylvania or Romania. He married my grandmother Erna and they then immigrated to Canada where they settled In Whitehorse, yukon territory where my grandfather worked In the gold mining industry during the gold rush. He past away in Costa rica in the mid 1980'a. My grandmother Erna is still alive and well and lives in British Columbia. It very much sounds like we may be related. Hope this message finds you well.
Best regards,
Kirk Fogarassy Calgary, Alberta Canada
