James Nesbitt Esq. of South Carolina

G. Moore  (View posts) Posted: 23 Oct 1999 6:55AM GMT
I am researching the family of James Nesbitt Esq. of Enoree South Carolina and also of Woodrff, South Carolina.
All help on this family line would be deeply appreciated. It is my belief that James Nesbitt Esq was the father of my gr gr grandfather, Nimrod Nesbitt. Nimrod was a slave. Nimrod was given to Niles Nesbitt, son of James Nesbitt Esq. as a gift. Niles, then became considered as the slaveowner of Nimrod. Nimrod and Niles were approximately the same age. I do believe that Niles may have been 4 years older than Nimrod or vice versa. Any information would be appreciated.

In what county was your James Nesbitt? Did he also own land? How many slaves did he have and do you have any other names? Not sure where my ggfather was from, but I am looking at Edgefield county as well as Abbeville county. Neither of the counties are definite. Any thing you can share would be appreciated. I have my Thomas on the 1870 census in Ala. which lists his birthplace as S.C.

Jaime,

To answer your question of the county of my James
Nesbitt. He lived in Spartanburg Co. He was a
businessman so he did travel a lot. However,
his residence was always, to my knowledge,
Woodruff, Spartanburg(in old age) and Enoree.
He had 12 or 13 children by two different
wives. I have the list of all of the children

Any of the children have any of these names:
Thomas, Nathan, James, Ellen, Robert, Joseph, Emma, Edward, Annie and Minnie. Minnie was my grandmother. Her father Thomas, was born in S.C. He ended up in the Montgomery, Ala. area. Any of these names match up with what you have?

Can you share with me the names of the children, please. Also, did your Nesbitt travel to Ala. the Montgomery area and/or were there Nesbitt relatives there?
Thanks,

Jamie

I have misplaced my Nesbitt notebook and don't know all of the name off of the top of my head bu the names that I do remember are Niles Nesbitt(slaveowner of my ancestor), Langdon Chevis Nesbitt, Caroline, I think Adeline Medora, David B. Nesbitt, Nancy Narcissa Nesbitt, Deveiw Nesbitt, I think a William Nesbitt and those are all that I can remember without notes.
As for the travels into what places, I don't know. When James Nesbitt sq. died, he was in Rome Georgia. All of my notes say that he went to Ga. and points west on business.

Did James go to Ala. in the Montgomery area? My Thomas may have been on a plantation of some one named Godwin or Goodwin outside of Montgomery. Thomas had a brother that did contracting/building work in the Montgomery area. They could have been brought over to Ala. from S.C. at some point. Thomas wife was the child of the cook and Master. Her name was Annie Godwin, she lived in the big house and was trained by her fathers wife to do very fine needle work. Unfortunately, I do not have any names, of people or places, other than already mentioned.

My Thomas was b. abt 1830 in SC, not sure where. Was in the Montgomery, Ala. area in 1868, as he married Annie. What can your dad tell you? Have to work back, from the known. I do not know about my Thomas, but would love to.
