Looking for info on Jefferson Smith, who is one of the twenty names on the single-page 1880 Census for La Moure Co. The Census indicates he is married, but no family members are listed.

1900 Census, Grand Rapids, family 37: he is listed as Jeff Smith, age 73, widowed, in the household of Daniel & Carry Parshall - Carry (Carrie) is his daughter.

Jefferson Smith's wife was Lydia, and he also had daughters Josephine/Josie, b. abt 1853, and Gertrude, b. abt 1849.

Daniel & Carrie Parshall had moved on to Cache, Comanche, OK by the 1910 Census, and Jefferson Smith in no longer with them, so I assume he died in La Moure Co.

Particularly interested in identifying the maiden name of wife Lydia and what happened to daughter Gertrude. Gertrude is apparently a step-daughter of Jefferson Smith, as her name was originally Gertrude Slater (1860 Census, Kalamazoo Co, MI).

Anyone know more about the 1880 Census for the county? There are 15 heads of households, but only two have any other family members enumerated. Does that mean all of those other heads of household were really unaccompanied, or were the family members present in the county but just not enumerated??

What sources have you checked for information in ND?

In regards to the 1880 census for LaMoure County you must remember that there were very few people in North Dakota at that time. Could he have come by himself to check it out and then the rest of the family came later? Where were they living before they came to North Dakota?
