Looking for any information on Noah Evans born abt 1876 in Ohio. He married Nellie E. Whitman born abt 1880 in St. Charles, Saginaw County, Michigan. They had the following children Minnie b. 1902, Clifton b. 1904, Arthur b. 1906, Oletha, Lorraine b. 1913 and Basil born 1918. All of the children were born in Saginaw County, Michigan. The story goes that Noah killed a black man during a card game and went to prison, we are not sure where this happened but we did find him in the London Prison Camp in 1930. His boys Clifton and Basil were found in Trumbull County living with Russel Lewis and his mother Elizabeth and this same time in 1930. We do believe that Noah died about 1950 in that area. Possibly Steubenville, Ohio or maybe West Virginia. Anything would be helpful. Thanks

Tammy,

A check of the records of the Ohio State Penitentiary shows that Noah Evans appears in Register #30 on page 140 as prisoner number 54836. He was 51 years old when he was convicted of manslaughter in Belmont Co., Ohio, and was sentenced to 5 to 20 years. He arrived at the penitentiary on 27 October, 1925, was transferred to the prison farm on 14 December, 1925, and paroled on 1 September, 1931.

Belmont County lies across the Ohio River from Wheeling, West Virginia, and is also adjacent to (on the South of) Jefferson County, Ohio which is the location of Steubenville. A check with the Belmont County Courthouse should allow you to locate the records of his trial in the Fall term of 1925.

If you will e-mail me your mailing address, I'll send you a photocopy of the pertinent page from the prison register.

I hope this helps you.

Do you, by chance, know where the records for Ohio Penitentiary are held? I am looking for records on someone who was held there from around 1946-1950.

The Ohio Historical Society has Ohio Penitentiary Records from 1829 through 1973. See the OHS website here:
