Karen,
I don't have much on Laura. She was born 30 Nov. 1827 probably in
South Carolina since Leroy didn't appear in
Georgia until the 1840s. She is named in Leroy's
Bible records as a daughter (Source: Old Southern
Bible Records by
Memory Aldridge Lester). She appears in the 1850
Carroll County census with her parents and in the 1870
Heard County census with her second husband, James M. Stowers. Her first husband was William
Thompson with whom she had at least two sons, William and Franklin
Thompson. In 1870, there is a Leroy
Stowers, age 4, who is probably her son with the second husband. My sources are (1) loose papers and family group sheets I received from my aunt, Ruby
Faye McWhorter Barron, after she died. Faye did much research on this family back in the 1960s to very early 1980s, (2) Old Southern
Bible Records (above) and census reports from
Carroll and Heard counties in
Georgia. As you can see, I haven't pursued Laura with a passion (and neither did
Faye).
If you have more, I hope you will share it. I am related to this family through Laura's brother,
Moses Allen
McWhorter who married Sarah Kinney; his son, William Leroy
McWhorter who married Eliza J. Wren; his son, John Allen
McWhorter who married Sarah Jane Payne; and their daughter, who is my mother. Although William Leroy
McWhorter moved from the
Villa Rica area of
Carroll County to
Cullman County,
AL with some of his younger children and died there, my branch (John Allen
McWhorter) remained in the Carrollton-Atlanta area and eventually settled in East Point.
That is a really old message. I'm surprised it got a response. But glad it did. :-)
