did laura remarry after her husband john dudley leland died? she must have to have the last name of ELGIN.laura was the daughter of joseph page&elizabeth crigler, they are buried in fayette i found them, but not laura.i have the obituary for john dudley leland, the way the obituary talks he is buried in carrollton, missouri,he was a practicing dentist there.oh,i am also doing some research on the boys and girls dormitory orphanage that was in carrollton,i have photos of the original buildings, one houses the headstart program and the other houses the offices of the national guard.the girls dormitory was shutdown and then reopened as a mental asylum for troubled youths.i wonder just what else took place in those buildings? all i know is my aunt ran away from there right after she and her siblings were taken there in 1927.any help appreciated.

i just returned from fayette missouri from walking the cemetery and checking headstones, laura is not in the fayette city cemetery,if and i say if she is she is in an unmarked grave or the family had her cremated and she is sitting on someone,s mantle in an urn.we checked every headstone, laura was not found.did not find john d.leland either or w.h.elgin.they are not in the howard county missouri cemetery book either.we spent about three hours walking the cemetery.we checked every headstone.

laura is not buried in fayette, missouri,we walked that cemetery for atleast three hours and we did not find her or john d.leland,i have his obituary and he was a mason and buried under the masonic rites ritual,i will type a part of what it says here:

DR.LELAND WAS AN HONERED MEMBER OF A.O.U.W.LODGE OF THIS CITY AND WAKENDAU CHAPTER,MASONIC LODGE OF CARROLLTON,MO.FUNERAL SERVICES WERE CONDUCTED BY REVS.PENDLETON BROOKE AND THOMPSON PENN,AFTER WHICH THE UNITED WORKMEN TOOK CHARGE OF THE REMAINS AND LAID THEM TO REST IN THE SILENT CITY OF THE DEAD,WITH APPROPRIATE CEREMONIES.

this does not tell me where he and laura are.all i know is they are NOT in howard county, missouri.if there was a big headstone dedicated to john d.leland and laura we would have found it.i kind of believe laura was cremated and is sitting on someone,s mantle somewhere.i found laura and her second husband w.h.elgin in the 1900 randolph county, missouri census.so something isn,t making any sense, she could not have died in st.louis like her obit says.i think her obit was doctored to make it look good and i think there were mistakes made on her death certificate,i don,t think laura committed suicide,i have my theories as to what happened to her.until i can verify and document my theory,i will keep it to myself for a while.

Hi Carla
The death of Laura is in The Republican Record issue of 11 May 1911 P1 C5. It states what the death certificate says as to how and where she died. Also the Carrollton Daily Democrat issue 8 May 1911 P2 C1&2 says the same.
These are on microfilm at Carrollton Public Library,660-542-0183, 1 N Folger Carrollton Mo 64633. Email director@carrolltonlibrary.com

the death certificate is wrong!she didn,t die in st.louis nor did she die in howard county, missouri, nor is she buried in howard county, missouri,we walked the cemetery and checked every headstone in the fayette city cemetery.i found laura and w.h.elgin in 1900 living in moberly, missouri which is a few counties to my north.so something isn,t right.

Just because you did not find a headstone does not mean that they are not buried in this cemetery. Many times there are no stones or there was a stone but it has eroded or been destroyed by vandals.

Have you asked for a listing from a caretaker?

Also do not assume that just because the "united workman" took charge of the remains and had appropriate ceremonies, that they also supplied a stone.
