Canter family from Missouri

I am very interested in obtaining any information about John & Tabitha Canter from southeast Missouri. They came to the Yakima area in the early 1900's and with their 8 children, lived their lives there.

My great-grandmother, MayBelle Canter, would have been John's sister.

Any info will be greatly appreciated

You don't say what info you already have and what exactly you are looking for.

You may find some information in the online Washington State Digital Archives. I believe I found John CANTER'S death info listed, although the spouse is written as "Telitha", not Tabitha.

Good morning,

I have used the website from Washington state and it is awesome and have recived several obituaries including John & Talitha.

From those obituaries I have gathered lots of names which, again, has helped immensely in building this part of our family tree.

I truly would love to get in contact with any of those family members who may be looking for their ancestors back here in Missouri.

There is a Canter history group which is very active, the administrator is from Ohio which is where most of the Canter's orginated from and moved into Kentucky, Illinois, Missouri and points west, mainly Washington state.

I am especially interested in Aaron Canter, who died in 1914, he was just married in Missouri before he moved with his family to Washington and died probably within the first year of moving there. I would love to know what happened to his wife, Agnes (nee Nelson) and if he had any children. I think my fascination with him and his family is that it is such a mystery and I love a good mystery!!

Thank you for your response, maybe this will also trigger a response from someone else.

Hi Karen,

It's interesting to note that Aaron's online death certificate doesn't list a spouse. I find no indication of Agnes' death or remarriage in Washington State.

I have searched through several online newspaper subscription sites but don't have access to any historic Yakima papers.

You, or another Canter family member, might find old Yakima area newspapers interesting. I have found surprising information about my own family from various locations, and also got a good idea of what life was like in the towns my family lived in. Here is the link to the Washington State Library newspaper site. Your local librarian can order films through interlibrary loan for use in your own library:

Hi again,

I was curious abaout Agnes CANTER, wife of Aaron, and find a 1915 death certificate in Missouri for a 17 year-old Agnes CANTER, nee NELSON. I know Aaron's 1914 death certificate does not list a spouse, and this Agnes' death certificate states she is married, but I thought I should bring it to your attention in case there is a link:

HI Beth,

Where did you find the death certificate for Aaron Canter?

Is it a copy of the death certificate or what is online from Washington State?

I do have the death certificate from Agnes Canter; age 17. I also noticed that it listed her as being married.....sometimes you wonder what the family knew, was she trying to protect herself or someone else???....we will never know. I located the cemetery where her parents are buried, it is not too far from where I live and will see if I can locate any info about her there, her death certificate has her listed as being in the same cemetery with her parents.

Thank you for the link to the newspapers in Washington, I will probably be hitting that one hot & heavy.....

again, thanks for your help & ideas...

Karen

Good evening,

I located Aaron's information from this website about 3 months ago as well as most of his family. I have also used the "Ask-a-Librarian" which sent me a lot of obituaries on line. These are 2 awesome links from Washington that I have taken total advantage of.

Missouri has available actual copies of death certificates from 1910-1958 via the internet through the Secretary of State website. This is also so valuable and free.

again, thanks for the info

Karen

Hi,

I live in Yakima and go to the Yakima Valley Regional Library and the Yakima Genealogical Library often. I will see what I can find on Aaron and Agnes, their children, etc. after this holiday weekend.
