This is not a family that I am researching but I am familiar with online resources and thought I’d see what I could find for you. The following information is all from primary sources as follows
Nova Scotia Vital Stats (birth, marriage, death records) are available online at
www.novascotiagenealogy.caThis is a free and searchable site maintained by the Nova Scotia Archives. You will need to download a viewer program which is free onsite to see the actual record.
1901 and 1911 Canadian Census are available free at

The family of Owen Shields in 1911 consisted of the following
Owen Shields, head, widower, born Oct 1845. Caulker in the shipbuilding industry
William Shields, son, single, born Apr 1873, janitor at school
Margaret Shields, daughter, single, born Jul 1882
Evelina Shields, daughter, single, born May 1884
Lillian Shields, granddaughter, single, born Jun 1897
Gladys Shields, granddaughter, single, born Aug 1901
Hazel Shields, granddaughter, single, born Jan 1905
Oliver Shields, grandson, single, born Dec 1906
Douglas Shields, grandson, single born May 1907 (William Douglas)
In 1901 the above family consisted of Owen and his wife Sarah (born Mar 1846); their adult children William, Margaret, Eveline, Jessie and granddaughter Lily.
Twenty years earlier the 1881 Census records the family as follows
Owen Shields, male, Irish, age 40, born NS, labourer
Sarah Shields, female, Scottish age 34, born NS
James Shields, age 10
William Shields, age 9
Maud Shields, age 8
Purney Shields, age 6
Maggie Shields, age 2
Frederick Skein, African, age 5, born NS, a pauper
The records available on the NS Vital Stat site add a bit of detail to the above. The marriage certificate of Lillian and Gilbert DesChamp can be see there and she lists only one parent; her mother Margaret. It would appear that the other grandchildren listed on the 1911 Census may have also been Margarets. At least William Douglas was, as his death certificate is also online and his mother is given as Margaret Shields. I can’t find any records on the other 3 grandchildren of Owen which is not unusual. Records were not mandatory until a little later. Because of Privacy Laws, records can only be made public to a certain date. With birth certificates I believe it is around 1910, marriage certificates to 1935.
The Marriage Record of Owen Shields and Sarah Wilson is also available on the NS Stat website
