I am looking for the parents of George Mitchell born 4 Jul 1820 somewhere in Maryland. He met Zillpha Ann Smith, born in Licking County, Ohio and married her there approximately 1848. They are in the 1850 Licking County Census as Leo Mitchel, wife Zilpha, child Lucinda, child Mary, and another person Josiah age 21 who was also born in Maryland. George and Zillpha moved to Crawford County, Illinois sometime after the census and he died there in 1856. George is my GGgrandfather.

I am in the same line, descended from Lorenzo Dow Mitchell who married Catherine Meek of Coshocton Co., OH. I would like to know more about Abel Mitchell, and about John Mitchell his father. If you want to e-mail me at home, the address is nimblethimble53@yahoo.com.

I read a sad tale about an Abel Mitchell (l750-afterl883) who was a Revolutionary soldier who applied for pension when he was a very old man in l883 and was turned down because there was no witness to the information (Well no...I guess they had all died!) He was living with a son Abel Mitchell ...who had recently lost a leg...he was a journeyman tailor....and the old man's wife was blind. He was living in Philadelphia.

I know the Meek family came to Coshocton from PA. Is that what the Mitchells did too? And could the Abel above or his son be a brother to our John. Maybe they named our Abel after him or something?

And I have another question to pick your brains on. The above "Sad Abel" was born in London...and came to Baltimore, Md. l769. Is that what you expect to find when you go back far enough on our line?

I thought our Mitchells were German in origin. My great-grandma Catherine Meek Mitchell spoke German, and it is remembered that the Mitchells prayed long prayers in German in their home...(by someone who probubly wished they hadn't been quite so long!).

What think ye?

Georgia, hello. I am descended from Lorenzo and Catherine via Abel, then Estella (my grandmother). I would love to know if you ever were able to confirm that this John was Abel's (b. 1806) father? If so do you have his wifes name and have you been able to go back further? Have you had any luck with the Cornelius Geary and Mary Elliot ancestry? Guess I'm just full of questions. I'm putting together a family history book and just want to make sure I'm up to date with the history. Thank you very much!

Suzanne

Suzanne, Lozenzo's brother Jared is my gr gr grandfather, you say you are thru Lorenzo and then Estella? What is the relationship of Estella? Do you have any info on the brother Barzillar Mitchell and wife Martha Ann Ingmire? I too have not had any luck on proving that John Mitchell was the father of Abel Mitchell (b. 1806). Does anyone have a photo of Lorenzo? I have a family photo of Jared and his children and would like to compare photos of brothers. Thanks ahead of time for any info. Vicki

Hi Vicki,
Lorenzo is my gr gr grandfather so we are of the same generation. Lorenzo's father is Abel and Lorenzo and Catherine had a son by the name of Abel also. This Abel is the father of Estella, my grandmother. I have only the basic info for Barzillar and Martha - dates, locations, children - all retrieved from ancestry.com. I have no personal info for them. I do have a photo of Lorenzo and have posted it with my so far itty-bitty public tree on here. I will also attach it to this. I would love to see the photo of Jared and Julia's family. Let me know if you want what I have on Barzillar. Suzanne

Lorenzo is my great grandfather. Married to Katherine Meek. Their daughter Mary Jane Mitchell is my grandma. Her son John Dow Merritt is my dad. I have Lorenzo's dad as Abel Mitchell born about l806, mother Rachel Donaldson born about l814 died before l840, and that LD married Rebecca Donaldson second.
I also have Abel's father as John Mitchell l780-l849 and wife Elizabeth l778-l866. Does this correspond to your info? Could you send me the pic of Lorenzo at nimblethimble53@yahoo.com.
Thank you.
