I am searching for information on my grandfather's brother, John Tober. A family story says that he started the Tober Baseball Co. that at one time was located in Rockville, CT. Does anyone know about this company or where I might find information about it's founders?

Hello
It is my understanding that Meyer Tober was the owner or one of the owners of the Tober baseball Co. which was located in Rockville CT. Meyer Tober was my grandmothers (Nellie Tober Sisitzky)brother. He was murdered by one of his employees. He had 2 sons, Richard and Sidney who chose not to be involved with running the company. As a result of these happenings the company closed.
When I was young girl I used to go to the Roosevelt Mills clothing factory in Rockville and although I may be mistaken I do believe that this was the location of the original factory. The last I knew they were planning to demolish this building. Perhaps you should check with the city of Rockville for more information.

Thank you for the information. Do you have any idea what your grandmother Nellie's father's name was??? My grandfather Sam came to the US about 1880. Is it possible that Sam's brother was your great-grandfather?? I'm grasping at straws since I can't find anything about my great-grandparents. I will try the Library in Rockville though - perhaps they have articles about the company that would help settle this for me.

Hello
My grandfather on my father's side was Louie whom I think was Meyer's brother. Growing up Meyer would always send us Tober baseballs. I wish I would have saved at least one,but we used them playing baseball. I believe Tober baseballs were used in the minor leagues thats my recollection. I always used to see them for sale as a kid. I thought that Meyer was murdered either in a plant in Puerto Rico or somewhere in that area by a disgruntled worker.

I was related to Meyer Tober's second wife, Rose. I spent many holiday and summer vacations with them in Manchester, Conn. as a child in the 1940s and 1950s, and at their second home in New London near Ocean Beach. He was the owner of Tober Baseball and I visited the factory in Rockville and sorted bags of softball and baseball cut-out forms and watched as they were sewn by hand to make the balls. His sons Richard and Sidney went their own ways, not interested in the baseball business. The name Tolland rings a vague bell, not sure about that.

I do not know much about the company but I do own a vintage "TOBER BASEBALL CO" sign. It is really cool.
