I am looking for information on my great great grandfather Charles S. Yeager. He was born in Northampton in 1924, he married Almira Mina Loomis in Dummerston, VT in 1846. He died in May of 1895 in Upstate New York. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

There weren't many Yeager's in 19th century Northampton.

I did find a death record for:

Charlotte Yeager b. Susqueanna (PA?), widow of Benjamin, died September 15th, 1849, age 53 in Northampton of dysentery.
(vol. 40, p. 110)

On the 1850 census for Northampton, there's a Benjamin, born NY, age 59, laborer. Daughters: Marietta age 17,
Charlotte age 15, both born in MA.

On the 1860 census, Benjamin is living with his married daughter:

Name: Benj Yeager
Age in 1860: 67
Birth Year: abt 1793
Birthplace: Massachusetts
Home in 1860: Northampton, Hampshire, Massachusetts
Gender: Male
Post Office: Northampton

Household Members: Name Age
Rufus Abba 27
Charlott Abba 25
Charles B Abba 2
Charlott I Abba 2.12
Benj Yeager 67

Maybe Charles was named for Charlotte's brother? Your Charles also has a son named Charles B on the 1860 census. The "B" may be for Benjamin.

Because your Charles resided in both NY and PA, and it looks like Benjamin was born in NY and maybe Charlotte his wife was born in PA where Charles S later lived, there might be a link there.

If you go to www.familysearch.org and choose the record search pilot, you can download the censuses that Tina mentioned (search for Charles S) and also the 1850 with
Benjamin.

Good luck.

S.

I am also a descendant of Charles S. Yeager and Mina Loomis.
I am also looking for more info about their parents and records in New England.

I have some family tradition stories about their elopement aand marriage. Briefly, Mina and Charles fell in love but their marriage was not approved by her parents as he was only a groomsman and was beneath her status. So they eloped. I was told that they married in Connecticut but could be wrong. they moved to Rochester NY and from there purchased property in the town of Scio, Allegany county. The property was in her name. There is a road named after them and their farm was on top of the hill. They had a saw mill also.
Please send any info you might have.

Sorry, but what I posted a few years ago is all I know.
My family was from Northampton, named Jager, and that's
what interested me in the Yeagers. I don't think there's
any link though.

I do know though, that the Loomis family were friends
and neighbors of the Jagers in Florence and Williamsburg, MA, but Loomis is not an uncommon name in New England and
brides were usually married in their family church/hometown.

Sorry I can't be of any more help than that.

I am glad you posted. I apologize I have not been on for quite some time, I have been moving. Charles and Mina did elope, the eloped in Dummerston, Vermont. Charles was a coachman to the Loomis family. They did have a saw mill as well in NY, that was where Charles Yeager died. My great uncle still has his old watch. There is a road named after them in Scio, NY. I have been to this road before. There was a farm on a hill, I am not sure where it was located in NY. I would like to hear from you. Thank you again for posting!

I apologize for responding so late, I have been moving. Jager was how my family spelled their last name, I am not sure when they changed it to Yeager. Did you grow up in Northampton? I would like to hear from you. You can contact me at my e-mail address g_lewi28@yahoo.com. Thank you!

Hi Guy,

Such a weird thing. I decided before I emailed you to see if there had been anything new added to ancestry. I found a book with records for Northampton from the 1600s to 1988 written by the town clerks.

There are about 2600 pages so I was randomly scanning 100 pages at a time (100, 200, 300, etc). My 3x great grandfather had a 2 yr old daughter on the 1850 census, but I've never found any other record for her. So I paused at the 1849-1850 death section of the book (the book has births, deaths and marriages, very loosely in chronological order, but within a century it jumps around within decades).

I saw an entry for Charlotte Yeager's death on September 15, 1849 of dysentery. She was 53 years, born in Susquehanna, NY (not PA as I previously thought). Wife of Benjamin Yeager and she's buried in Northampton (probably in the old Bridge St Cemetery). Family trees here on ancestry have her maiden name as Brooks. I've copied the document and will email it to you later today (Monday).

Weird, huh?

Charles's brother Silas P. Yeager is my third great-grandfatehr. They are both sons of Benjamin Yeager & Charlotte Brooks of Northampton. Silas m. Betsey Nurse (a descendant of Rebecca Nurse, hung 1692 in Salem as a witch. Betsey is from Dummerston, so perhaps that is why Charles married Mina there. There are other siblings: Ellen Maria, Ermina H., Marietta P, and Charlotte B.
