I am not related to the Riggs family, but I came across a very old piece of paper in a "secret" compartment at the bottom of a small inexpensive wooden box. On it was written in very old-fashioned penmanship: Compliments of Walter (?? hard to read) Smith to Miss Rosa Riggs and would be pleased to go to the sociable with her tonight at Mr. Bonds.
This was at an estate sale, but many items were donated as well, so I have no clue as to its source. The box, which appeared to be homemade out of a balsa-type wood, did not appear to be valuable and did not sell and was going to be discarded. But I hated to throw away such a personal momento, one that evidently was important enough to Rosa Riggs to put away and save. If there is any chance this belongs in your family, I would be happy to mail it to you.

Re: handwritten note--Rosa Riggs
I have three Rosa Riggs in my family tree, two are men. The female was Rosa L. Riggs born Aug 1894 in Cave In Rock, Hardin County, Illinois. I know nothing else about her.

Re: handwritten note--Rosa Riggs
Just ran across this post and was wondering if this may have come from Arkansas? My gg grandmother was Rosa Riggs in Arkansas and married William Nelson Brown.

Re: handwritten note--Rosa Riggs
I guess it is possible. I don't have any information other than what was on the note, as it was found in a tag sale. I'll try to locate the note and if I still have it, I will let you know and be glad to mail it to you "just in case."

Re: handwritten note--Rosa Riggs
Thank you. I was just wondering in what state did you buy it? That might give me an idea if it is ours or not.

Re: handwritten note--Rosa Riggs
I'm sorry, I didn't understand!
I actually didn't buy it. I was helping at a charity tag sale where there were a lot of things donated and it was impossible to tell where individual items came from. When it was over, everything left was thrown away or given to the Salvation Army. I just couldn't bear to discard something that obviously had meant enough to someone for them to keep it in a tiny little hand-made balsa wood box.
This happened in Burleson, Texas, near Fort Worth.

Re: handwritten note--Rosa Riggs
It is very likely that is from my Rosa Riggs. Thanks for the reply. Rosalind

Re: handwritten note--Rosa Riggs
Oh my gosh! I hope I can still find it! I'll look tomorrow and let you know. Then I'll ask for your address. I would scan it and post it online, but the pencil writing is very faint and I don't think it would scan well.

Re: handwritten note--Rosa Riggs
I couldn't go to bed until I looked for it, and I found it!
It may not mean much to you, as there isn't much there. But it seemed like if someone kept it for a very long time (as it appeared very old) then it must have meant something to her! I just couldn't bear to throw it away.
Could you give me your mailing address and I will send it tomorrow.
