JAMES OSCAR HATAWAY

Tiffany Shoop  (View posts) Posted: 12 Jul 1999 11:22AM GMT
My grandmother's name was MINNIE VIOLA NELSON, b. 5 Feb 1894 (don't know yet
where she was born) died Jan 1987 in Ontario Canada. She MARRIED JAMES
OSCAR HATAWAY, b. 1892 in Coffee County, AL died 16 Dec 1957 in Winter
Haven, Polk County, Florida. They were MARRIED on 22 Nov. 1914 in Coffee
County, AL.

They were LIVING in Elba, Alabama at the time of my mother's (Myrtice Diana
Hataway, last child) birth b. 05 Jan approx. 1933. They MOVED to Florida in
1941 where they opened a grocery store on Dundee Rd, Winter Haven, Polk Co.
Fl. Minnie lived there till 1971 after my grandad died. Then she moved to
Canada with my mother after my mother remarried a Canadian.

At the time of my grandad's death it read remaining CHILDREN as:
Mattie Lou (Hataway) Brooks, Orlando FL ( she married QP Brooks)
Fannie Mae (Hataway) Bush, Sanford, AL (she married John D. Bush)
Bertha Hataway, Austin, TX
and my mother at the time was listed as Myrtice (Hataway) Muncey,
Greensboro, NC. [Muncey was misspelled-it was Mincey, and they weren't
married]

There's a Death Certificate filed in Vol. 1928, Certificate #41233. Which
I don't have as yet. Also, I was told that James Oscar Hataway was in the
1900 US Census of Coffee Co. AL and should be listed with his mother
and father as an 8 year old child. But, I have no access to it.
My grandmother's mother's name was "POLLY" that's all I know that she was
known as. Just like my grandad's legal name was James Oscar, but was called
Oscar. Polly had 13 children and MINNIE was the baby, the last child.
I am trying to find out the NAMES of my both of my grandparent's PARENTS and
where they lived, so I could find their BROTHERS AND SISTERS and/or possibly
their brother/sister's children.

Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated. I also know that my
great great grandmother was a full blooded Choctaw, some say Creek,
but, some say she was on my Grandad's side and some say on my Granny's
side, I would really like to know her name; that was what I was told when I
was a little girl, but I can't find the relatives and haven't seen any of
them since I was little. The relations at that time was in AL. GA and FL
and?

James Oscar Hataway was buried in the Lakeview Cemetery in Winter Haven,
Polk County, Florida. Minnie was buried in Ontario Canada.

I'm looking for any records, or anyone with access to records, bible
records,
pictures as I only have one picture after a fire, of my grandmother left,
and
any assistance you could give would be so greatly appreciated....humbly.
Thank you for helping me to find them.

I, too, am having a terrible time locating my Hataway/Hattaway/Hatiway/Hathaway ancestors. Those I know about were in Indiana and Michigan in the 1800s, but I don't know where their families were before that. They are shown on census records to be mulatto or colored and oral family history says that we are part Indian...I don't know what kind. It has also been said that we were part Portuguese. I believe now that we were among the Melungeon communities. If I find out that my Hataway ancestors were in AL, GA, or FL, I'll let you know. So far, I have found an Alfred HATTAWAY who was born and died in Greenville, SC (1905-1969). I'd appreciate any information you might be able to share, as well. Thanks.

My mother's maiden name was Hataway, the daughter of Baalam Hataway. She was born in Butts County, Ga in 1913. Her grandfather's name was Milton. I have not started researching the Hataway family yet so the info I have is limited. Perhaps we can assist each other. At least there will be a few more Hataway listings here.

Thanks for sharing what you have. There is so little information available on any of the Hataways, that every bit helps...perhaps we'll connect one day.

Hello, I have only been researching a short time and I can not even get started. Here are the names I have:

I am told that my Grand Father was Henry Hataway and he died in or around Hillsboro Texas around 1924. He was married
to Della (Davis) "they think" her last name was. She died in the 1990s with the name Della Ward. Their son (My Dad) was
Doyle Ward Hataway. He married Velma Marie Duke (My Mom) and had two sons, My self Tim Hataway and my brother
Doyle Ward Hataway Jr. My brother has three children, Tracy, Detra, and Greg Hataway. I have two children, Trishalane and
Rocky Hataway.

If you come across a link please let me know. I am learning that my line of Hataway's is very hard to find.

Good luck with yours

Tim Hataway
