Heinrich Hamann

Volker Hamann  (View posts) Posted: 5 Aug 1999 8:56AM GMT
SS-Obersturmführer Heinrich Hamann was commander of the Nazi Security Police in Cracow. Actually I live in Crakow, therefore any information about his private life during the german occupation of Poland and later is interesting for me.

Hamanns from West Prussia (Brodnica, Poland)

I am the great-grandson of one Christian Hamann, born, apparently, on March 29, 1864,in what is now, Brodnica, Poland and what was then Strassburg, West Prussia. He apparently had 11 siblings. I know nothing about his parents or his siblings, except that he had a twin brother named Lewis Hamann who lived in New Jersey, USA. I am looking for any information on this branch of the Hamanns that I can find. Can anyone help?

Dear John Haman,
sorry, i know less than you about it. I am just seeking hints, where genealogically the family of the Gestapo Chief of Krakow, Heinrich Hamann, came from. He is directly responsible for the death of many people of polish and jewish-german and other origins. He lived with a polish woman in Krakow while in the same time he was married with a german. Knowing his roots might add some interesting aspects to a movie about him which is in preparation.

Thanks for replying. Are you involved in the production of the movie? Any other details? What's your relation to Heinrich?

I am really curious about the movie that is
being made. Do you know the name of it and
when it will be shown?
My Grandfather was Frederick Hamann who was
born in Germany in 1852 and died in Minn.
in 1894. Married to Caroline Wold. I can
remember something about someone being from
Alsace Lorraine. I can trace him only in
MN. He is buried there.
Don't suppose you know any thing that would
help me?
Thanks, Sandy

Dear John, I am the a great great granddaughter of Christian Frederick Hamann who came to the states from Prussia somewhere around 1871. He was married to a woman named Weibke Stolley who was also from Prussia. They were married in St. Louis. They had 5 children - Louisa, Henry, William, Mary "Maggie" and Emma. Does any of this fit into your family tree?

Sounds like we have two different Christian Hamanns from Prussia here, since they married two different ladies. My Christian was married in New York about 24 years later. Who knows, though -- maybe there is a connection, and I'll keep this information in my file. Do you know where in Prussia your Christian was from?

Movie?

My gg-grandfather, Peter John HAMAN/HAMANN was born in Prussia probably BEF. 1855. He came to the United States as a stowaway on a ship, so there is no record of his immigration. Sometime after he arrived in the US, he changed his last name to HOMAN (I don't know when or why). Peter had one brother and two sisters that I know of. I don't know how his siblings came to the US. I don't know his brothers name. His sisters were Tillie and Anna. Tillie married Peter Jacobs and they had one daughter, Vera. Anna married a man whose name was Patrick (don't know if this is first or last name). They had a son, Lee, and lived in Council Bluffs, IA. Peter John HOMAN married Sophia Jane Johnson and they settled in Davenport, IA, where their 5 sons were born. All 5 boys changed their first and/or middle names (don't know why). Children of Peter and Sophia were: 1) Ben- (born Benheim)b. 1875 m. Minnie __? d. 1938 Omaha, NE.
2) Emil Leonard-my great grandfather (born Emil Luther)b. June 25, 1877 m. Aug. 17, 1917 to Jessie Ellen Hagerty, d. July 14, 1941 Wheatridge, Jefferson Co., CO.
3) Edward Charles- b. 1878, m. Katherine __?
4) John Arthur (born Ian Andrew) b. 1880, m. Bess ___?
5) Harry- b. 1882

This is all I know about my great grandfather's family. I've really hit a brick wall. If you think there may be a connection or have any advice, please e-mail me at bgnarly@gte.net
Thank you,
Sara Marshall

John Arthur

This might be purely a coincidence, but my grandfather's name was John Arthur Haman (corrupted from Hamann). He was born Dec. 10, 1905 and died in 1983. He was from Long Island, and lived most of his life in Queens.
His father, Christian Hamann, was born in 1865 in Prussia. I guess John Arthur might have been common, but its an interesting confluence. I know so little about my branch of the Hamanns that I can't tell you if there's any link. Thanks for writing. You can reach me at haman@peoplepc.com.
