I am looking for information regarding my great-grandmother, Teresa Leabu, who may have resided in Fogaras or Netotul in what is now Brasov district. She worked as a nurse for the (Rom.?) Red Cross during WWI before she immigrated to Ohio, USA around 1920, but she may have had one or more sisters who remained in Romania. Any relatives in Romania or USA, please get in touch!

I have some updated information from Form SS-5 from the Social Security Administration.

Teresa Leabu was born July 1892 in Netotu to George Leabu and Eva Nimereiti. George may have been the mayor or sheriff of Netotu or Fogaras. Eva died young. George probably remarried, yielding at least a half-brother who immigrated to Ohio, USA.

Any information on these and related Leabus would be appreciated. Anyone know how to obtain birth, death, marriage, and baptism records from Brasov district?

information regarding Leabu family from Gura Vaii (former Netotu)

Hi,

I was browsing the net some days ago looking for possible records of unknown relatives registered on genealogy web sites. I was born in Fagaras, a town from Brasov district and my great-grandfather traveled two or three times to America in the early 1900Â’s but he came back and he bought land at home.
Anyway, I did not find anything useful for me but I discovered this web site and I saw your message. I am living now in Timisoara, a town on the western part of Romania close to Hungary and the well-known Yugoslavia but I grew up in Fagaras. The names you asked about in your message sounded very familiar to me. So I thought that maybe I can help. I was not able to do this myself but I asked my parents to help (they live in Fagaras), they are retired now but they still have a lot of connections and they know many people around.
The village you are asking about is very close to Fagaras (~7 miles) and the name Leabu is well known in the region, there are a lot of families with this name. The name Netotu is not used any more it was changed to Gura Vaii. My parents knew a family from that village with the name Leabu. There are many families with this name thought in Gura Vaii. They went there to see them and they told them about your message and left some data that they had from your message (name, date of birth and everything that you wrote in your message about Tereza Leabu). The family there told my parents that they will try to ask around, old people from the village and at the church and they will call back if they have some results.
Well, they called and told my parents that they found an old lady that may be TerezaÂ’s sister, she told them that Tereza Leabu, her sister, was married Boia in America in Baltimore and that she has some letters from Tereza.
So, I thought that this might be useful information for you. I cannot be sure if the old lady is TerezaÂ’s sister but one thing that my parents told me was that they did not left your name to the family and the old lady told them about Tereza who was married Boia.
If you want more details or if you want to get in touch directly (although I do not know if you know to speak Romanian, they definitely cannot speak English) I will try to help further.

--Sorin

P.S. By the way, your name – Boia sounds Romanian also, do you have Romanian root from your father also?

John - I'm not related to the Leabu Family (at least not that I am aware of!), but do have an inquiry posted on the forum for Romanian ancestors from Soars. Anyway, while reading a response to my posting, I noticed your search for the the Leabu surname. This may be a shot in the dark, but I recently had my sewing machine serviced by Leabu Sales & Service in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Here's the address and phone in case you want to follow up:

Leabu Sales and Service
1960 S. Industrial Hwy, #C
Ann Arbor, MI 48104
phone 734) 663-3033

I don't know where you are located, but Southeastern Michigan was home to many Romanian immigrants, and is still full of us Romanian descendant (many of whom are desperately searching for our roots!). An quick note or call to Leabu may help you in your search. Good Luck!

Dear Viktor

Greetings from Europe. My family are well known weavers of wool and flax. We make a comfortable fitting dinner suit and not a bad pair of hessian trousers. Our relatives in Albania are good with root vegetables and grow a mean crop of potatoes. I am very happy to hear news of you from RMIT which I understand means Romanian Ministry of Intricate Threads. Yours sincerely Slobovic

My name is John E. Leabu. My Uncle John started the Leabu sales & Service Business in Ann Arbor in the late 1940s or early 50s. He was married several times and his third wife was given the business in the 1980s after divorcing my uncle. Her son Gene changed his name to Leabu and now operates the store but he is not related to the Leabu Family in any way.
I woul;d be interested in hearing from someone who has info on the Leabu Family from Romania.
