SCARFF (or variant spelling)

I am attempting to trace my "Scarff or Scarf" roots and believe that they may have resided in the Isle of Man from the early 1400's to the mid to late 1700's. It is my contention that some migrated to England and other to Ireland. My great great grandfather lived and was married in Ireland in the late 1700's up to the early 1800's when he and his family emigrated to Eastern Canada. Some moved progressively west while others either stayed in Quebec or Ontario and others moved to the United States.
I believe that the name may have originated as "Skerf or Skerff" and later changed to "Scarff or Scarf"
If you know of any "Scarff/Scarf" history, I would be ever grateful to hear of same. Thankyou very much.

I am interested in the Scarf(e) family from West Bromwich in the UK. Caleb Scarf born 1828 married Elizabeth Jones 25 April 1847 and had 11 children. I now know Caleb's father was called Edward Scarf ( married to Mary). There seems to be some connection to Scotland because, unusually Caleb's twin daughters were born there in 1854 and another connection to Yorkshire. Has anyone come across details of Edward Scarf and Mary?

I haven't any information on Scarff/Scarf etc. relatives in England & Scotland at this time. I am tracking my family back to Ireland but I do know that a number of their relatives did in fact reside in England. Sorry I can't help at this time but perhaps when I accumulate more info I can send you that which may tie in.

I have now found details suggesting that Edward Scarf married Mary Turton in West Bromwich on 21 November 1825. Had two or three children. Joseph, Caleb and possibly John.
Edward was born in High Ercall in Shropshire circa 1807/1806.
If anyone else is researching this family, please contact me.

Do you know if your folks have any connections to Ireland pre: 1820?

My Scarff's came from Ireland to Canada about 1820.

Hi Colleen

I only know that Edward Scarf was born in High Ercall in rural Shropshire 1806 /1807 and moved to work in the industrial area known as the 'Black Country'. He married Mary Turton. Their son Caleb (a direct ancestor of mine) was baptised at All Saints church in West Bromwich in 1828.
Edward was connected with the iron industry. His occupation at the time of Caleb's baptism was 'forgeman'. In the 1851 census he was a 'day labourer'.
I have not yet found a record of the Scarf family at High Ercall or any link to Ireland but I continue to work on it.

I am interested in what you know about the Scarff history. My grandfather was born in Douglas, Isle of Man. He supposedly had two brothers named William and "Jack" (nickname) we are not sure of his real first name. My grandfather was born 12/10/1881. I hope you can help.. Thanks so much

I have not been able to find a link between my Scarf family and those on the Isle of Man.

I have discovered that the Isle of Man has its own family history group at
http://www.isle-of-man.com/interests/genealogy/fhs/

I have got as far as Edward Scarf born in High Ercall, Shropshire in 1806/1807 who moved from this rural area to the newly industrialised West Midlands where he married Mary Turton in 1825 and had a son, Caleb Scarf born in 1828. Thanks to Ancestry.com I am now in contact with other descendants of Caleb in the USA and in Australia.
