I've been searching for years for the ancestors of this family. Lyman
Mathews and Lydia (
Wyckoff) were my Great Grandparents and am not really sure if his parents were
Levi and Mary as there were other Mathews/Matthews who settled in
Kinsman,
Turnbull County, OH in 1799. I have information on the
Wyckoff line. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

3. Lyman2
Mathews (Levi1) was born March 01, 1815 in
Kinsman,
Turnbull Co., Ohio, and died
Abt. 1884 in probably Minneapolis,
Minnesota. He married Lydia
Wyckoff January 10, 1837 in Gravel Run, PA, daughter of John
Wyckoff and Sarah Clark.
Notes for
Lyman Mathews: He resided at
Kinsman,
Ohio,
Sylvan,
Wisconsin, St. James, Minn.(?), Minneapolis, Minn.
Church affiliation was apparently Methodist (Epis.?)
At this point, we have not ascertained which of the
Mathews men living in early
Kinsman, was the father of
Levi, grandfather of
Lyman. John & Isaac
Mathews were in the original survey party in 1799, of the tract purchased by Mr. Kinsman, of Conn. Deacon William
Mathews, of Georgetown, Penn. came to
Kinsman about 1803-1804. There were George, a
householder and family man, a short time after this. Levi was listed as a young single man in 1805, in
Kinsman and was in the War of 1812. Nancy was the sister of John and Isaac, who were, I believe children of the
Deacon. Thomas was there with his wife Eleanor and their daughter, Rachel. She married Charles B. Webber, son of an early settler. Electa J. was also a daughter of Thomas & Eleanor. She married Daniel Clinginsmith. We will have to search church records of the area to learn the parentage of
Levi and of Mary, his wife. The material above derived from HISTORY OF TRUMBULL AND MAHONING COUNTIES, Vol. II., published 1882 by H.Z. Williams & Bro., Cleveland.
Family tradition has it that the
Mathews family came west from Maine (Alta
Mathews Eldridge), but if so, that probably means that they were originally from Connecticut or Mass.
Marriage Notes for
Lyman Mathews and Lydia Wyckoff:
Marriage performed by Wm. P. Chamberlain of Waterford, PA., witnessed by S. B. Long and Wm. H. Clark.
Lydia
Wyckoff was the daughter of John
Wyckoff, descendant of Peter Claesen
Wyckoff, of Swedish and Dutch ancestry, and of Norwegian, Danish, English, Russian ancestors in the time of the Norman invasions.
J.M. Bull (Minister of Gospel of M.E. Church in Minneapolis, MN., where Lydia attended at
the time of her death) -- "Moved from
Kinsman,
Ohio to
Sylvan, Richland Co. Wis.
1849-1850. Stayed there during Civil War. Three sons son-in law in war." (Rufus, Lysander, James
Monroe Mathews,
Lyman Frederick Coolidge
Jones). In 1867 moved to "Richwood
Co." Mn. "Wyckoff Family in America lists Lymand as from St. James Mn. Perhaps they lived there before they moved to Minneapolis. When they moved from
Kinsman to
Wisconsinis not certain. James
Monroe may have been born in either place. l have however, the last four of their thirteen children were born in Wis. We do not yet know where
Lyman died nor when, but as some of his children were living in Minneapolis at the time of Lydia's death. It's probable that
Lyman Mathews died in Minneapolis. Several of their children moved west to
Washington State. Live and
Lyman F. Coolidge
Jones moved to
Whatcom Co., Wa., to settle finally.
In searching for these people, check Matthews with a double t also, although Alta says that her line always spelled it the other way. We fined that census-takers were often semi-literate, and that names could be varied by pastors, tax recorders, recruiters, etc.

Parker Mathews:
Rufus, who became a very prosperous man, lived in Minneapolis after the Civil war. In these records, there is not much of his background, but he was a musician in a Union Army unit, occupied the head or lead post in the band for his outfit. He was a business man after the war, and was said to have invented the basket across-the-store way of getting the money to the office and the change back, if any of you are old enough to remember the little box the
saleslady used to put the money and statement in, pull the cord, and send it sailing on its way above the heads to the cashier's desk on the next level.
