I have a ancestor I have been trying to research very heavily for the past couple of years. I believe I have narrowed down the region he is from and around about when he was born. I have found results that seem to be very similiar to what I am looking for, the only problem is that the dates of birth are different. How likely is it that the date of birth that is recorded on his headstone is incorrect and the information I have uncovered is him?

Re: Conflicting birth dates?
The date on the LDS transcription purports to be a birth date but is more likely to be a baptism date. Have you seen the original record?

Re: Conflicting birth dates?
I have seen both of them, the birth for Sept 14, the baptism for Sept 18. At first I thought maybe his parents waited to baptise him, but this isn't the case. I really wish I could find his immigration record from Charleston, SC, that would help a lot I think.

Re: Conflicting birth dates?
There is a chance that the birth date on either or both records is incorrect.
Usually it is a survivor, not the decedent, who arranges to have a headstone carved so it is not unusual for the survivor to make a mistake.
I have no knowledge of German birth records, but if one is available, try to get the birth certificate. If your ancestor married, the birth information may be on his birth certificate.
Try posting on the appropriate Germany board for help with German records.
Good luck!

Re: Conflicting birth dates?
Did you check the census. If you find him in the census you might be able to figure the correct year. Good Luck!
