Chuck: I'm very new to this genealogy digging, but have something that "may" be helpful to YOU! I have in my possession a privately printed (in extremely poor condition) book entitled "History of Old
Pendleton District and Genealogy of Leading Families" by Richard
Wright Simpson. The first two pages of the book are missing so I've no idea when it was published. Simpson died in 1912 at the age of 72, so I'd guess it was done somewhere between 1875 and 1900. The text is exceptionally flowery and old fashioned and makes for a great fun read!
The section on "
Davis Family" goes as follows:
"Warren R. Davis and his sister Martha
Davis, came to
Pendleton in its early history (
Pendleton County came to be in 1789 - Acts of 1789, Vol.7, p 252). I think they came from
Sumter County. Warren R. Davisnpracticed law at
Pendleton and was Solicitor for several years, and was elected to the U.S. Congress in which he served several terms. He died and was buried in
Washington D.C. He was perhaps the most noted wit, and the most popular man in
Pendleton. He never married. His sister, Miss Martha
Davis, married John E. Calhoun, brother of Mrs. John C. Calhoun. W.R. Davis and his sister, Mrs. Martha
Calhoun, were first cousins to Gen. Wade
Hampton."
This may have nothing to do with your
Davis group, but both
Anderson County and
Pendleton County were part of the old Cherokee lands and there was much confusion and splitting done before it all settled down.
My interest is in the
Whitner family and I'm having a rough time finding anything on the net!
Have a wonderful Christmas and enjoy your "dig".
