Does anyone know anything about this place, or anything about a murder that took place there in the late '30s? A 20 yr old girl was dancing there with a girlfriend when her jealous ex-suitor shot her through the window. She died in route to a hospital in Hartford. I was wondering where this place was in Holmes county. Any help would really be appreciated.

Thanks!

How would I go about getting a copy of this book ? Murder at The Rocks?, I noticed the name Peters listed as surnames on your Query , and I am doing research on the peters side of my family. Thanks, Lillian

Hi Lillian,

It wasn't a book, but info in an article I found in a relative's house. The girl was my gggrandfather's daughter by a second wife. Both her parents had passed away. She apparently was dancing at a "juke joint" called the The Rocks, when she was shot by a jealous suitor (according to the article). She died on the way to the hospital. Another Rootsweb user said "The Rocks" still stands on Hwy 2, I believe, but is closed. At the time of her death, I believe this girl was living in Black, in Geneva Co.

My aunt is married to a Peters, and I also have Peterses in other lines. Are you from around Geneva Co.?

Bev

My grandfater was Oscar C. Peters, He and his first wife Sarah lived in Geneva , AL. He married my Grandmother Betty Wells in 1902, I would love to learn more about him. I know he and Sarah had one son Named Jessie D. Peters, I do not know if she died or if they divorced. I have come to a dead end on my research, I think his dad was George W. Peters and his mother was Zilpha Smith. Would the Peteres you are connected to know of my Grandfather. I was just down in Holmes Co. in July for the all night sing, but did not get to go to Court house or the Library. Lillian

Bev,
What was the girls name who was killed ? Was there a trial and was there a conviction of her killer ? I grew up in Bonifay in the 50's , and I have never heard about this.

I am also interested in the juke joint. A often whispered family story of my Great Aunt Ada Coatney/Courtney was that her older brothers had to go to a juke joint in the Bonifay area and "jerk Ada off a table dancing for men". She was always considered a colorful character who we loved. The whole family left the area in the 1930's.
