I was able to find Middleton Brooks in the Patriot Index, as follows:

BROOKS, Middleton
Ancestor #: A015055
Service: VIRGINIA
Rank: PRIVATE
Birth: 1759 CAROLINE CO VIRGINIA
Death: 11-16-1851 JACKSON CO GEORGIA
Pension Number: *S31572
Service Source: *S31572
Service Description:
1) CAPT EDMUND KING
2) COL PETER ROGERS

Residence: 1) Halifax Co, VA
Spouse: Sallie Smith

I found no listing for Middlton Brooks.

Also, the only application papers for Middleton Brooks were through his children Alfred, Thomas and Rachael.

Application papers often list the children of a patriot, along with reference(s) for the list of children. You might want to check some of the more recent application papers to see if you can find a connection between Middleton and his son Middlton through this list.

Other possibilities for proving a connection include probate records, church records, and land records.

You may order copies of a member's application paper citing Middleton Brooks’s service. Please order only one copy at a time. To order, write to our national headquarters, including the above information from the Patriot Index and a check made payable to the TREASURER GENERAL, NSDAR in the amount of $10.00 (per copy).

Mail this to Library Copy Services, NSDAR, 1776 D Street NW, Washington, DC 20006-5303. Please allow 6-8 weeks to receive a reply.

Member Application papers can give you genealogical information, sources of documents, and a list of the ancestors children, if known. In general, you can really benefit from these copies.

If you or someone in your family is interested in joining DAR, please send me your name, complete address and telephone number and I will forward it on to a chapter near you.

If we can be of further assistance, please let us know.

Hi Laura,
Thanks for the information. I'm getting ready to mail in a request to DAR headquarters and I want to be sure I understand what you meant before I do.

Do I understand correctly that I can order a copy of a DAR member's application whose ancestor is Middleton Brooks and it will show his decendents which would include the connection to my ancestor?

Thank You
Grace

Hi Grace,

If Middlton Brooks is a child of Middleton Brooks (the patriot), then, yes, Middlton would likely be included on the DAR application, with a reference to a source for the list of children.

Note that not all DAR applications will contain complete information (such as a complete list of the patriot's children). Your best bet would likely be a recent application, as documentation standards have gotten more robust over the years.

If the two men are related in a way other than father/son, a DAR application may not be as helpful.

Hope that helps. Good luck in your search!

If we can be of further assistance, please let us know.

Laura
