My great-grandfather was Frederick (Frank) Style who was born in Holland around 1877. His parents were named Andrew and Johanna. I found records through Genlias that show an Andries Stijl married to Johanna Verhoeve in 1865 in Dirksland.

On the mother's side of my father was my great-great-grandparents Pieter De Dreu and Neeltje Van De Griek and their daughter Kaatje born Oct. 9 1893 in Yerseke, Holland.

I have traced through the 1910, 1920 and 1930 census records of Islip, Suffolk, Long Island, New York that all my ancestors who came to America to be Oysterman who worked the Great South Bay.

I also found a Gerardus Van Ysseldyke married to a Johanna in America who had listed in the 1900 census a step-son named John Style who I assume to be Johanna's son of a previous marriage.

The problem I've run into is there is not a single United States immigration record of Andries Style (Stijl), Johanna Style (Stijl) Frederick "Frank" Style (Stijl), John Style (Stijl), Peter De Dreu, Neeltje De Dreu, Kaatje De Dreu, or Gerardus Van Ysseldyke.

All my research has shown that these families came from Zeeland or Over-Flakkee, South-Holland and apparently all were Oysterman. Their entry to the United States has been listed to be approximately 1887-1890.

Any information that helps me bridge the gap of my ancestors from the Netherlands to the United States would be greatly appreciated.

Re-uniting with any ancestors from the Netherlands would be even more exciting.

Hello Els,

Marion Style (Smith) was my grandmother...daughter of Gilbert Smith and Kaatje De Dreu.

Kaatje De Dreu was one of 5 daughters listed in the 1900 US census of New York, Suffolk county, township of Islip, District 771.

The name was spelled "Drau" by the census taker and in other census records spelled De Dreu. Pieter and Neltje's children at that time were...

Lydia born Dec. 1887
Pieternella born Jul. 1890
Elena born Feb. 1892
Kaatje born Oct. 1893
Marina born Oct. 1896

What I have found out so far, is most of our Dutch relatives at that time lived in the Islip / Sayville area of Long Island, New York. Most worked in the oyster industry.

Using this information, you might be able to find out more regarding the marriages of the other sisters.

I was able to find the civil marriage record of Pieter De Dreu and Neeltje van de Griek through Genlias. Both were born in Kapelle and married in Yerseke in March 1886.

Also, you may want to contact the Bureau of Vital Records, NYS Dept. of Health, Albany, New York 12237 and/or the Suffolk County Historical Society at 300 West Main Street, Riverhead, New York 11901. phone: (516) 727-2881.

I hope this helps. And, any information you may have regarding the the ancestry of Pieter De Dreu and Neeltje van de Griek would be greatly appreciated.

Take Care,
Robert

Hello Els,

Thanks again for the information. Do you happen to know the name of the ship that Pieter and Neeltje came over on?

I have had terrible luck in trying to find the passenger manifests or port of entry into the United States of Pieter and Neeltje de Dreu; Johanna Stijl-Verhoeve and her children Frederik Stijl(my great grandfather), John Stijl or Baaltje Stijl; or Gerardus van Ijsseldijk (the man Johanna Stijl-Verhoeve married once in the United States). According to census records...they all arrived in the period of 1888-1890 depending on which census record is viewed.

Hi,
I believe Gerardus VanYsseldyke was married to Tannetje Daane in the 1880s in Yerseke. They went to Argentina in the late 1880s and she was killed. Also think 2 of their children were killed or kidnapped. Then the family left S.A.

I am very curieus to know where the information that Tannetje Daane was killed and that two of the children from Gerard van IJsseldijk en Tannetje Daane were killed or kidnapped in Argentina and that the family left S.A., comes from.

I have contact with relatives in Argentina with the name Ysseldyk and they told me something about two children who died on board of the ship.

Tannetje Daane and Gerardus van Ysseldyk were my great x2 grandparents. My grandmother, Jennie Iseldyke Saak, told me that Tannetje died in Argentina, she did not know the cause of death. I also have a Dutch family bible that belonged to Tannetje's parents and her death is listed in it with a notation that she died in Argentina. I think that the 2 children who died belonged to her sister Jannetje and her husband Lawrence van Aalst. They apparently went to Argentina with Tannetje and Gerardus. Gerardus took his children back to Holland and then on to the USA after his wife's death. He married Johanna Stijl and settled in Long Island, working as an oysterman.
