We are from New York. My father was Peter, who had brothers Valentine, Theodore, John Fredrick,Edward, Michael. Sisters Louise and Emma. My Grandfathers name was Thedore, his wife was (I believe)Mary Von Macky, or Mackey. They all were residents of Brooklyn, N.Y in the early 1900's. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

My grandfather, Joseph Hegel was born in raised in Brooklyn in the early 1920's. Although my grandfather was an only child, his father's name was Peter and mother's name was Katerina (Burger)Hegel. My grandfather also had an uncle John who lived in the same area.

Natasha, My Fathers name was Peter, but had no brother named Joseph, unless Joseph was related to my Grandfather Theodore. They lived in the east N.Y. section of Bklyn. My Uncle Valentine lived in Canarsie. Thank you for responding. Bob Hegel

Bob, I am trying to identify my grandmothers roots. Word has it she was orphaned as a child and grew up in an orphanage. I believe I have identified her maiden name as Hegel. Her name was Emma. I found her and a brother, Michael in the 1920 census in the St. Giles Home for Cripples (Hempstead township [Garden city] Nassau Co., NY). She was 12 and Michael 5. my grandmother was born Dec. 25, 1908. Could she and Michael be 2 of your father's siblings? If so, any knowledge of why they were raised in an orphanage? I've written soc. sec. for copies of her application. Hopefully that will confirm the surname.

As these things happen, I stumbled across your question during a regular web search for something unrelated. I saw your comment about St Giles and thought you would be interested in the little information I have on it. St Giles was on Mayfair Avenue, in West Hempstead, and occupied most of the grounds from Groton up to 1st Street (east side of the street) with it's back up against the dead ends off of Westminster. I lived on one of those dead ends in the 60's and 70's and I believe it was there until sometime in the early 70's. We used to play in what I guess had been the gardens towards the south end of the property. At that time, I was told it was for polio patients, and that there were very few patients left after the vaccine was developed. It was torn down sometime in the 70's and a housing development put in.
